This article was published today, and the timing couldnโt be better as families head into another school year.
September has a way of showing us things summer sometimes canโt.
A young person may have seemed completely fine over the summer, and then school starts and suddenly weโre seeing ๐๐ง๐ฑ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐, ๐ข๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐ก๐๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐ก๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐จ๐ซ โ๐ ๐๐๐งโ๐ญ ๐๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ.
Summer can take the pressure off, it also takes away a lot of the structure that keeps the teen brain in practice. Later nights, slower mornings and less structure โ then September asks the brain to switch gears quickly.
๐A rough start to September is ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐น.
๐ Here is the part I encourage parents to pay attention to.
If the struggle continues, starts interfering with everyday life, or your gut is telling you โthis feels like more than just getting back into the routine,โ๐๐ค๐ฃโ๐ฉ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐จ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐ก๐ค๐ค๐ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐จ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ค๐ง๐ฉ.
The brain learns through repetition. The more often avoiding school, shutting down or escaping something uncomfortable brings relief, the more likely the brain is to reach for that same response again.
๐Thatโs how ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐ can slowly become ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง.
๐Catching it earlier gives us a chance to understand whatโs underneath it and start building a different response before the old one becomes harder to shift.
If a family comes to mind while youโre reading this, feel free to send them my way. A little support early on can go a long way for these kiddos.๐
While some students are eager to return to class after a summer of freedom, others face a torrent of anxiety.
