This week, the YWCA Banff team came together for a day of learning, unlearning, and connection; hand-sewing our own ribbon skirts as part of our ongoing preparation for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. 🪡✨

Knowledge Keeper, Teresa, taught us that a ribbon skirt is an act of reclaiming. She explained that its full length carries deep meaning, honouring the role and sacredness of women, and that each skirt comes together slowly, through intentional choices with thread and colour.

In many Indigenous cultures, ribbon skirts are a powerful symbol of identity, resilience, strength, and sovereignty. Each skirt tells a unique story, but as we quickly learned: the skirts were the vehicle; the teaching was the point.

What many of us will carry forward isn't just the sewing, but what the day asked of us: to slow down, to wait, to ask before changing something, and to trust that learning takes the time it takes. Working at someone else's pace turned out to be both the most challenging and the most valuable part. 💙

A massive, heartfelt thank-you to Teresa, alongside Arizona, Annette, and Noreen, who guided us with such infinite patience and made it a safe, welcoming place to be a beginner. Thank you also to Cree Nisga’a Clothing for the beautiful, meaningful fabrics sourced for our team.

And a special thank-you to Shane from our People & Culture team for organising this incredible day and bringing us all together for this vital work - which is only just beginning!

We asked girls aged 9 to 12-years-old when they feel most powerful.

Their answers might surprise you.

🌟 In May, we hosted Power of Being a Girl, a one-day event for girls and gender-diverse individuals from Grades 4-6.

💪🏽 Through workshops on healthy friendships, body image, and self-talk, we helped girls in the Bow Valley create better relationships with themselves and each other.

🌱 Earlier this week, our YWCA Banff team walked into the heart of the forest to pause, connect, and ground ourselves.

We gathered among the trees for the Braiding Knowledges: Climate and Mental Health Workshop, hosted by our wonderful People & Culture team (Shane & Sara).

We were deeply honoured to welcome guest speakers Cory Beaver (Iyarhe Nakoda) and Tanya Pacholok (Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley), who guided us through weaving together climate psychology and Iyarhe Nakoda teachings; reminding us of concepts like wazin îchinabi (living in harmony with the land, each other, and ourselves) and makočî ahopam (caring for the earth/land).

Surrounded by nature, we explored how climate anxiety is a natural response to the changes around us, engaged in grounding creative exercises, and ended with a hands-on planting activity. 🪴

✨ Special mention to Cory’s young niece who stole the show by showing us all how to properly plant our pots!

Tending to these small herbs is a gentle daily reminder of care, reciprocity, and nurturing what matters; both in our environment and within ourselves, as we move through seasons of change together.

Our new blog shares the impact of Power of Being a Girl, our one-day event for girls and gender-diverse individuals ages 9-12. We hosted this impactful event in May, with workshops focused on building confidence and self-esteem.

💜 Together, the girls learned what healthy friendships look like, and how to feel more comfortable with their bodies and emotions.
