🚨VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 2026 Jewel Lake Trout Egg Harvest! 🐟

We need your hands on deck! Our annual Egg Harvest is taking place in late October, and we are looking for volunteers to help us ensure another successful season for our local fishery.

In the wild, Lake Trout egg survival is under 1%—at our hatchery, it jumps to over 75%! Every volunteer hour directly helps restock and protect our local lakes.

What We’ll Be Doing:

Gill Net Collection: Positioning and retrieving MNR-supplied nets after dark (in 40-minute segments).

Field Processing: Expressing eggs, fertilizing, and treating them right at the lake site for transfer.

Hatchery Care: Counting, treating, culling, and placing eggs into incubation tanks.

📍 Location: Ashby Lake, Addington Highlands, ON

🗓 Timing: Late October (triggered once water temperatures promote spawning)

Two canvases nailed together depict an unnamed residential school. An opening, partly stitched together, reveals orange and red handprints beneath the surface. The orange handprints represent truth and reconciliation. The red reflects teachings received by the artist that red is a colour the spirit world can see. Together, the handprints bear witness to the physical and spiritual violence of residential schools.
