Baptiste Lake Association The Baptiste Lake Association is a voluntary group of members committed to representing the interests of the residents of the Baptiste Lake area.

The Association works closely with residents as well as all levels of government to conserve and enhance the environment of the lake and its surrounding area. The initial association was founded in 1949. The Mission is to be achieved through the observance of the following goals and objectives:
1. To monitor water levels and quality on an ongoing basis.
2. To actively promote land use planning policies and programs for the lake which have a long range vision, and help retain the character of the lake.
3. To promote water and boating safety.
4. To inform lake residents about official plans, by-laws and building codes affecting their property.
5. To inform lake residents about government action which affects them.
6. To educate lake residents and others about the environmental impact of their actions.
7. To maintain membership in FOCA, BACA and other non-profit organizations dedicated to the cause of conservation.
8. To promote a sense of community among the lake residents through the support of social events.
9. To promote fire safety and prevention.
10. To promote, maintain and support links with the surrounding community.

🚨VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 2026 Jewel Lake Trout Egg Harvest! 🐟

We need your hands on deck! Our annual Egg Harvest is taking place in late October, and we are looking for volunteers to help us ensure another successful season for our local fishery.

In the wild, Lake Trout egg survival is under 1%—at our hatchery, it jumps to over 75%! Every volunteer hour directly helps restock and protect our local lakes.

What We’ll Be Doing:

Gill Net Collection: Positioning and retrieving MNR-supplied nets after dark (in 40-minute segments).

Field Processing: Expressing eggs, fertilizing, and treating them right at the lake site for transfer.

Hatchery Care: Counting, treating, culling, and placing eggs into incubation tanks.

📍 Location: Ashby Lake, Addington Highlands, ON

🗓 Timing: Late October (triggered once water temperatures promote spawning)

If you have an address in Ontario, and love our Ontario loons - please spend a few minutes to read this, and act!

The #1 cause of death in adult loons is lead poisoning from ingestion of lost fishing tackle. Lead affects not just loons, but eagles, swans and many other wild animals. And, of course, it can impact us humans.

This is sad and absolutely unecessary : there are lots of viable non-toxic available alternatives (e.g. tungsten, steel, bismuth, tin).

Lead shot has been banned for migratory birds for years. Please consider signing the petition we have initiated to regulate use of lead-based fishing tackle in Ontario.

Ontario Land Tribunal Update Re: Benoir Lake Rd / Elephant Lake Development OLT-25-000818

Further to the article in our Spring Newsletter https://baptistelake.org/WS/Main/newsletters.php the proposted development on Benoir, Elephant Lake and the York River, here is the latest update.

Tuesday July 28 the Case Management Conference was held to determine next steps for a hearing on this case. On Wednesday, August 19 a decision was issued from the team lead from the Ministry of Attorney General office. Please refer to our website https://baptistelake.org/WS/Main/index.php for a copy of the actual proceeding notes.

The hearing will start Monday February 22, 2027 (anticipated to last 15 days).

The Baptiste Lake Association have hired legal representation to oppose this development and have been approved to be a party to this hearing.

The legal costs for the BLA are being covered by donations. Should you wish to donate, please do so by etransfer to [email protected] and let us know in the comments what the donation is for. We appreciate all and any donations to this cause. We will be providing other ways that you can help, e.g. by sending a letter or signing a petition closer to the hearing date. Stay tuned!
