Police are reminding boaters about the importance of properly fitting and maintained life jackets after several safety violations involving children were discovered during recent vessel checks on Lake Dalrymple.

According to the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, officers encountered three separate boats where children under the age of 14 did not have proper, usable life jackets. In each case, the boat operators were charged.

Police said one incident involved a nine-year-old wearing an oversized adult large to extra-large life jacket. Officers noted that an improperly fitted jacket can slip off if a child falls into the water.

In another case, a 14-year-old weighing more than 100 pounds was found wearing a youth-sized life jacket that was too small to provide proper buoyancy. Officers said the youth required an adult small to medium-sized jacket.

A third vessel inspection found outdated life jackets from the 1990s that were torn, degraded and being used as seat cushions. Police said worn or damaged life jackets may no longer provide adequate flotation due to deterioration caused by sun exposure, water damage and regular wear.

The OPP is encouraging boaters to check that life jackets match the wearer’s size and weight, fit securely and are free from damage before heading onto the water.

Police are also reminding the public that simply having life jackets on board is not enough if they are not usable or properly fitted.

Even though our lakes appear frozen and peaceful right now… ❄️
not all ice conditions are the same.

Bubblers can create open water and thin ice around docks and boathouses, which may pose risks to winter lake users. Some municipalities also regulate bubbler use, making it important to stay informed before installing one.

As reported by FOCA to members last year, Transport Canada has made it effective January 6, 2026 that all boats’ Pleasure Craft Licenses (PCL) now have an expiry date, and a $24 fee applies to new, renewed, transferred, or replaced PLCs.

Important note: this is different than the “Pleasure Craft Operator Card” that is issued in your name; this is for your boat(s) and a copy must be carried on board at all times.

If you have a boat that was licensed in 1974 or earlier, you must 'renew' by March 31st this year, or face fines. If licensed between 1975 and 1985, you have until the end of 2026, etc. The new standard will be a 5-year renewal period for PLCs. Get all the details - including a renewal deadline chart by boat license date – from our partners at CanBoat, from a link in the “Latest News” on FOCA’s webpage: https://foca.on.ca/boating/
