🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ Team GRFS Joins the 2026 Kitchener Terry Fox Run

The GRFS Youth Group has formed Team GRFS to participate in the 2026 Kitchener Terry Fox Run and help raise funds in support of cancer research.

On Sunday, September 20, our youth, volunteers, families, and community members will come together to honour Terry Fox’s legacy of courage, determination, and hope.

For GRFS, this is more than participating in a community run. It is an opportunity for young people to experience community service, teamwork, social responsibility, and the impact that can be created when people come together for a meaningful cause.

☀️💙 Kids To Camp 2026: Five Days of Learning, Friendship & Fun!

Grand River Friendship Society has successfully completed its five-day Kids To Camp 2026 Summer Program, bringing children together for an exciting week of learning, creativity, sports, teamwork, and community connection.

Throughout the week, participants enjoyed:

⚽ Soccer, volleyball, Spikeball, Frisbee, and relay races
🤝 Team-building and problem-solving challenges
🎨 Canvas painting, keychain design, and play dough activities
🤖 Robotix and hands-on STEM projects
🚀 Water rockets, paper airplanes, and egg-drop challenges
🎯 Games, friendly competitions, and shared experiences

Kids To Camp was about much more than activities. The program created a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where children could make new friends, build confidence, communicate, cooperate, respect differences, and develop a stronger sense of belonging.

This meaningful program was made possible with support from The Waterloo Region Record – Lyle S. Hallman Foundation Kids to Camp Fund, held at Waterloo Region Community Foundation.

⚽ Thank You, City of Waterloo!

Grand River Friendship Society is grateful to the City of Waterloo for supporting the expansion of our Weekly Open Soccer Program through the 2026 Sports & Recreation Grant Program.

This support will help us continue providing welcoming and accessible weekly soccer opportunities while reaching more newcomer youth and adults, mentors, and community members.

Through soccer, we are creating opportunities for physical activity, friendship, cross-cultural connection, and a stronger sense of belonging.

🎢✨ A Memorable Day at Canada’s Wonderland!

Our GRFS Grade 12 Mentorship Program youth recently enjoyed a fun-filled day at Canada’s Wonderland together with their mentors.

From exciting rides and plenty of laughter to meaningful conversations and quality time together, the day provided a wonderful opportunity for students and mentors to strengthen their connections and create lasting memories.

At GRFS, mentorship goes beyond academic and career guidance. It is about building trust, offering consistent support, creating meaningful relationships, and walking alongside young people as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.

As our Grade 12 students continue through their final year of high school, we are grateful to the mentors who continue to encourage, guide, and support them along the way.

A sincere thank you to all of our mentors, volunteers, and youth who made this experience so memorable.

Grand River Friendship Society is excited to welcome middle school students to a free five engaging mornings filled with fun, friendship, creativity, and hands-on learning!

Participants will enjoy a variety of activities designed to encourage confidence, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and meaningful connections, including:

🌊✨ GRFS Grade 9–10 Students Enjoy an Educational Adventure at Niagara Falls

The GRFS Summer School and Mentorship Team recently organized a memorable day trip to Niagara Falls for Grade 9 and 10 students, offering an exciting opportunity to explore one of Canada’s most iconic natural landmarks.

A highlight of the day was the Niagara Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour, where students experienced the energy of the Niagara River through an exciting journey filled with rapids, turns, and plenty of splashes. 🚤💦

Throughout the trip, participants enjoyed the scenic surroundings, took memorable photos, spent meaningful time with friends, and created lasting memories together.

Educational trips like this are an important part of the GRFS student experience. They allow young people to learn beyond the classroom, strengthen friendships, build confidence, and discover new places in a safe and supportive environment.

Summer School Students Explore the University of Waterloo Campus

🎓✨ The GRFS Mentorship Team recently organized an educational visit to the University of Waterloo, giving students an opportunity to experience university life, explore academic pathways, and imagine their future possibilities.

The visit began at the William M. Tatham Centre, where students participated in simultaneous faculty tours. Seven students, accompanied by one chaperone, explored the Faculty of Engineering, while six students and one chaperone visited the Faculty of Health.

During these tours, students explored engineering buildings and laboratories, health facilities, lecture halls, and learning spaces while gaining insight into university programs and academic environments.

The full group of 13 students and two chaperones later joined a broader campus tour. Participants visited several important areas, including the Earth Sciences Museum, Quantum-Nano Centre, student services, lecture halls, and other campus landmarks.

Throughout the visit, students had opportunities to ask questions, learn about available programs and resources, and gain a clearer understanding of the university experience.

Educational visits such as this are an important part of the GRFS mentorship approach. They help young people build confidence, expand their awareness of post-secondary opportunities, develop academic goals, and connect their interests with future education and career pathways.

⚽✨ Football for Learning Summer Soccer Program Kicks Off with More Than 100 Participants

After two weather-related postponements, GRFS Sports Academy successfully held the first training sessions of its Football for Learning summer soccer program last Thursday and Friday.

The program was initially postponed when local fields were closed due to heavy rain and the risk of lightning. The following week, training was delayed again because wildfire smoke affected local air quality. The safety and well-being of our participants, families, coaches, and volunteers remained our highest priority throughout these decisions.

This week, we were grateful to begin the program in beautiful weather and a positive, welcoming atmosphere. More than 100 children and youth joined the first sessions, while families completed registration and connected with the program team.

Participants enjoyed meeting their coaches and teammates, developing their soccer skills, staying active, and having fun together. The energy, enthusiasm, and friendship displayed on the field created a wonderful beginning to the summer program.

Delivered through GRFS Sports Academy as part of our Football for Learning initiative, the program combines soccer with education, mentorship, teamwork, leadership development, confidence, and belonging.

We sincerely thank all families, coaches, volunteers, staff members, and young participants who helped make the opening sessions such a success. We look forward to a summer filled with learning, friendship, growth, and memorable experiences.

🌆🚲 Learning Beyond the Classroom: Grade 9 Toronto Trip

As part of the GRFS High School Summer School Program, our Grade 9 students enjoyed an exciting and memorable trip to the Toronto Islands and downtown Toronto.

The journey began with a bus and train ride from Kitchener to Toronto, followed by a ferry trip across the waterfront to the islands. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to explore new places, enjoy outdoor activities, strengthen friendships, and create meaningful memories together.

Trip highlights included:

🚆 Travelling from Kitchener to Toronto by bus and train
⛴️ Ferry ride to the Toronto Islands
🚲 Biking and outdoor activities
🎡 Chairlift experience
🐐 Visit to the petting zoo
🍦 Ice cream and beautiful Toronto skyline views

🍗 Popeyes picnic by the waterfront
🏙️ Visit to the CN Tower area
🚂 Exploring the Toronto Railway Museum

The trip offered a wonderful balance of recreation, learning, exploration, and community connection. Students experienced Toronto’s waterfront, transportation system, cultural landmarks, and public spaces while enjoying quality time with their peers and mentors.

At GRFS, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Experiences like this help young people build confidence, develop independence, discover new interests, and strengthen their sense of friendship and belonging.
