The Hard Side of Rescue š
This is one of the posts no one ever wants to write.
Over the past few days, weāve lost 2 of our 3-week-old kittens, just days apart. Our vet believes they were suffering from Fading Kitten Syndromeāsomething many people have never heard of, but something rescuers know all too well.
Fading Kitten Syndrome isnāt a single illness. Itās a term used when very young kittensāoften under 6ā8 weeksābegin to decline and āfadeā despite our best efforts. They may stop eating, struggle to maintain body temperature, become weak, or pass very suddenly. It can be caused by many things: infection, low birth weight, parasites, congenital issues, or simply being born too fragile to survive.
These kittens were part of a litter of 7, born to a sweet mama who came to us as a rescue and likely never had veterinary care before. From the very beginning, the odds were stacked against them.
Their foster mom did everything she could. Around-the-clock feedings every few hours. A homemade incubator to keep them warm. Constant monitoring, love, and care. One of the kittens was even seen by a vet just yesterday.
Sometimes⦠even when you do everything right⦠it still isnāt enough.
This is the side of fostering that people donāt often see. The sleepless nights. The constant worry. The heartbreak when love alone canāt save them.
But please know thisāthese tiny souls knew warmth, safety, and love in their short lives. They didnāt pass alone, cold, or afraid. They were cared for deeply, right until the very end.
Weāre holding our remaining kittens and mama a little closer today.
Thank you to our incredible foster for giving them every possible chance. And thank you to our community for always standing behind usāeven in the hardest moments.
