National Energy Efficiency Day: Save money, Cut pollution, Create jobsβš‘πŸ’‘

On Canadian National Energy Efficiency Day, we are recognizing something that affects every part of our economy: how we use energy matters.

Using energy more efficiently means reducing wasted energy and lowering emissions. Across homes, buildings, businesses and communities, improving energy performance can contribute to cleaner air, lower greenhouse gas emissions and greater energy security.

Energy efficiency is not the responsibility of one sector. It is an opportunity shared across homes, businesses, buildings, governments and communities.

This Energy Efficiency Day, let’s recognize energy efficiency for what it is: one of the most practical ways to lower costs, reduce pollution, strengthen energy security and build a more resilient Canada.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Today, We Remember πŸͺΆ

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the enduring impacts on First Nations, Inuit and MΓ©tis communities, families and generations.

Reconciliation goes beyond remembrance. It requires learning the truth, listening to Indigenous voices, acknowledging the harm caused by residential schools, and taking meaningful action.

🧑 Every Child Matters.
The truth must be remembered, and the work of reconciliation must continue.πŸͺΆ

πŸ† From Research to Action: Windfall is Helping Make Canadian Homes More Weather-ready πŸŒ₯ ☁ 🏑 β˜€ πŸ’¦

What if you could assess how prepared your home is for extreme heat, cold, strong winds and flooding, and get practical recommendations for what to do next?

Windfall Ecology Centre developed the Weather-Ready Home Assessment Protocol to help make that possible. The protocol brings a multi-hazard lens to residential home assessments, helping residents understand their homes’ vulnerabilities to extreme weather and identify practical steps to improve resilience.

This innovative work earned Windfall Centre the 2025 Gold Roof Award for Knowledge to Action from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The award recognizes projects that link excellent research to real actions making a difference in the housing sector.

The protocol is the first of its kind in Canada, bringing together best practices across several building science sectors to assess preparedness for multiple climate hazards.

Developed in collaboration with the Region of Durham, the protocol is now available to Durham residents, helping households assess their weather readiness and take practical steps to prepare for extreme weather.

And the work does not stop there. The protocol was designed to be shared, adapted and expanded, creating an opportunity for communities across Canada to apply a standardized approach to assessing and improving the climate readiness of homes.

World Green Building Week 🌎🏒🏑

As World Green Building Week comes to a close, one message stands out: our buildings need to be ready for the future.

The 2026 theme, , challenges us to think about buildings not simply as structures, but as places that need to withstand a changing climate, use energy and resources more efficiently, and remain adaptable as our communities, economies and energy systems evolve.

That means looking beyond new construction. It means improving the buildings we already have. It means reducing energy waste, lowering emissions and operating costs, improving comfort and performance, preparing for extreme weather, and making buildings more resilient to the changes already underway.

It also means recognizing that the transition must work for the people and communities who live, work and gather in these spaces.

Homes, offices, schools, hospitals, warehouses, apartment buildings and community facilities all have a role to play in building communities that are more efficient, resilient and prepared for what comes next.

As World Green Building Week wraps up, the call to is one worth carrying forward: build resilient, build efficient and build for opportunity.
