Ontario Expands Renewable Natural Gas Production with $19M Federal Investment

The Government of Canada has announced nearly $19 million to expand Generate Upcycle's London Digester, Canada's largest food waste anaerobic digestion facility.

The expansion will increase renewable natural gas (RNG) production by 450,000 gigajoules annually while generating an additional 86,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich organic fertilizer for farms in Southwestern Ontario.

The London facility will convert more food waste into low-carbon fuel and fertilizer, enough to power approximately 4,500 additional homes each year.

The project highlights how circular economy solutions can create multiple benefits from a single resource by turning municipal and commercial food waste into renewable energy instead of sending it to landfill.

For communities, investments like this reinforce an important principle: reducing emissions is not only about generating cleaner energy. It's also about finding smarter ways to use existing resources, strengthen local infrastructure, and scale practical climate solutions.
