Homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages require CO protection.

🏠 Make sure your home has the required CO alarms.
🔊 Test them every month.
🔥 Have fuel-burning appliances professionally maintained.
❄️ Keep outside vents clear of snow and debris.
🚗 Never run a vehicle or fuel-burning engine inside a garage.

If your CO alarm activates, get everyone outside immediately and call 9-1-1 from outside.

Safe charging matters — but so do the basics that save lives in every home.

Take a few minutes today to:
✅ Test smoke alarms monthly.
✅ Know 2 ways out when possible.
✅ Choose 1 outdoor meeting place.
✅ Once outside, stay outside.

Talk through your home escape plan with everyone in your household.

⚠️ If a lithium-ion battery starts acting differently, don't ignore it.

Warning signs can mean the battery is unsafe and should no longer be used.

Watch for:
✅ Unusual heat
✅ Swelling or leaking
✅ Strange odours or sounds
✅ Smoke or sparks

If a battery is smoking or on fire, get out, stay out and call 9-1-1 from a safe location.

🚒💦 TRAINING NIGHT - TUES OCT 6th | ATIKOKAN FIRE RESCUE 🔥

The Atikokan Fire Rescue team was hard at work sharpening their skills in portable tank operations, drafting, and tanker water shuttle operations.

The training objective was simple, but challenging!

Establish a continuous water supply to an operating attack line using water from a portable tank (porta-pond), while our tanker crew shuttled water to and from a designated fill site near Burnell Park.

💧 The challenge? Our tanker crew had to dump their water into the portable tank, travel to the water source near Burnell Park, refill, and return to replenish our water supply before the portable tank ran out of water, all while maintaining a continuous flow from the attack line.

This type of training is especially important in areas without our municipal fire hydrants, where establishing and maintaining a reliable water supply is critical to successful firefighting operations.

Training like this builds teamwork, communication, pump operating skills, and coordination between crews. It also reinforces how important water management is during emergency operations.

⚡ Once your device is fully charged, unplug it.

Leaving devices charging longer than needed can increase heat and wear on chargers, cords and batteries.

Today's reminder:
✅ Check devices as they charge.
✅ Unplug when charging is complete.
✅ Avoid overnight charging when possible.
✅ Stop using overheating devices.

📱 Where you charge matters.

Rechargeable devices should be charged on a hard, flat surface where heat can dissipate properly.

Avoid charging:
🚫 On a bed
🚫 On a couch
🚫 Under a pillow
🚫 Under blankets or clothing

Best practice:
✅ Use a table, counter or desk.
✅ Allow air to circulate.
✅ Never cover a charging device.
