Athabasca Watershed Council WPAC

Athabasca Watershed Council WPAC We work to build relationships, share information, and inform the planning and policy decisions that affect the Athabasca River Watershed.

We are a Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) working in partnership with the Government of Alberta and other stakeholders and Indigenous peoples to achieve the three goals of the provincial Water for Life strategy. We work to build relationships, share information, and inform the planning and policy decisions that affect the Athabasca River watershed. Our vision is that our watershed is ecologically healthy, diverse, and dynamic.

Check out our awesome staff after successfully planting 500 native shoreline plants at the mouth of the Tawatinaw River in the Town of Athabasca! Over time, these plants will strengthen the river's banks, making the waterbody more resilient to flood and drought. They'll also act as a filter for a variety of contaminants flowing off of the highway right above.

Thanks to the Town of Athabasca for helping to make this project possible!

Did you know that today, February 10th, is World Pulses Day? No, not the pulse that you feel in your neck, we mean pulses; the edible seeds of plants in the legume family! Pulse seeds grow in pods and include things like faba beans, chickpeas, and lentils. Not only are pulses good for us, being high in protein and fibre, but they are also some of the most sustainable crops in the world! Since pulses are a nitrogen-fixing crop, they require little to no fertilizer to grow, and can help reduce the need for fertilizer in future crops when included in crop rotations. Pulses also have a very low water footprint and extract water from a shallow depth in the soil, which can be beneficial in rotations by leaving the deeper water for future crops. Many of the pulses that we grow here, like peas, lentils, and chickpeas, are also tolerant of drought stress, making them a resilient crop to the unpredictable Alberta climate.

We encourage you to spend some time researching pulses, and maybe how you can incorporate them into your life - whether that's incorporating more pulses into your diet, or adding some pulses into your crop rotations! Happy World Pulses Day!

Meet our first featured this Friday: Arctic Grayling. Due to population decline, this popular sportfish has been closed to harvest since 2015. Arctic Grayling live in cold, clear waters. Fun fact: there is a butterfly called Arctic Grayling too! Learn more at https://athabascawatershed.ca/education-and-outreach/ where we have an info sheet all about this fish.
