Sin sibh a chairdean còire, | Hello dear friends

Comhairle na Gàidhlig would like to advise its stakeholders that the cuts announced last week will have a deep impact on the Gaelic community of Nova Scotia. Like all arts and culture organizations, we and other Gaelic organizations are facing 20% reductions to operational funding that will severely impact Gaelic cultural activities. Comhairle na Gàidhlig also received notice that it would not receive a grant to support the promotion of Mìos nan Gàidheal in 2026, and has followed up with the Minister to appeal this decision.

Comhairle na Gàidhlig has already had to eliminate a part-time position as a result of cuts and is concerned that other organizations may be faced with similar difficult decisions as they grapple with the reality of their own lost funding. While Comhairle na Gàidhlig is not directly affected, it is also possible for these cuts to further impact organizations that receive federal matching of provincial operational support.

The Office of Gaelic Affairs has had its Support4Culture funding envelope (which includes Gaelic Cultural and Youth Activities and Gaelic Intensive Immersion programs) cut by half for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27. This leaves only $62,500 to support community projects through those programmes.

Comhairle na Gàidhlig is deeply concerned by these cuts and their long-term impact on our community. We encourage our community members to reach out to their MLAs and Ministers to express any concerns and to advocate for equitable investment in Gaelic language and culture.
