Sayyidi Habib Umar Bin Hafiz relates to us that The Night of Mid-Sha’ban, known in Arabic as Laylat al-Nisf min Sha’ban, is one of the greatest nights of the year. In the Islamic understanding, the night precedes the day so it falls on the night before the fifteenth day of Sha’ban. ‘Ata’ bin Yasar, who narrated hadith from the Companions, said that after Laylat al-Qadr there is no night better than the Night of Mid-Sha’ban. Its greatness is due to the divine gifts that are bestowed during it.
As Sha’ban’s 15th night graces us, we embrace a tradition of mercy and reflection. It was in the stillness of the Baqi’ Graveyard, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once stood in prayer, as Sayyidah Aishah رضي الله عنها observed, a night where forgiveness flows more abundantly than the wool on Kalb’s sheep. ”The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘On the Night of Mid-Sha’ban, Allah ﷻ forgives all but those estranged by idolatry or discord.’” - Narrated by Ibn Majah.
And as Al-Suyuti narrated, it’s a night when destinies are penned by the Divine.
This night, known for its spiritual depth, is embraced with prayers and reflection, as we seek to purify our hearts and intentions. Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) has spoken of the special acceptance of prayers on this night, encouraging us to turn to Allah with our deepest hopes and sincerest repentance. Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) also highlighted the value of dedicating oneself to individual worship during these hours, reminding us of the personal journey each believer undertakes towards divine closeness.
This Saturday night let’s purify our hearts and pray for a destiny filled with divine benevolence. 🤲🌙
