We are looking forward to our Annual General Meeting coming up on Tuesday, June 16th at the Lobster Factory in Pugwash.

The evening will include a panel discussion with two prominent businessmen from our community, Carl Sparkes and Hans Christian Jost.

Meet the Speakers:

Hans Christian Jost

Founder of Jost Vineyards, Hans Christian Jost is a pioneer of Nova Scotia’s wine industry. After immigrating from Germany in 1970, his family settled in Malagash, where farming—and eventually a small vineyard—took root.

Following his father’s passing in 1988, Hans took over the winery and transformed it into Nova Scotia’s largest and longest-running farm winery. His leadership helped establish commercial wine production in the region and championed the use of local grape varieties.

Today, his legacy continues to shape the province’s reputation as a world-class cool-climate wine destination. Hans remains deeply connected to the Malagash community while continuing to innovate and expand his business ventures which include Tata Brew and Real Estate Developments.

Carl Sparkes

President and Co-owner of Devonian Coast Wineries, Carl Sparkes leads one of the province’s most recognized wine portfolios, including Jost, Mercator, and Gaspereau Vineyards, along with The Mercantile Social in Halifax.

Carl began his career as a petroleum geologist, working across Canada and internationally before earning his MBA from Saint Mary's University. He went on to hold senior executive roles in several of Canada’s leading food processing companies.

Since acquiring Jost Vineyards in 2011 with his wife Donna, Carl has driven growth, innovation, and brand development—helping elevate Nova Scotia’s wine industry while building a strong, competitive business rooted in rural Cumberland County.

Business Highlight!

⛳️ Condors Golf Lounge ⛳️

The Connector was in Downtown Amherst this week to speak with Laura, owner for Condors Golf Lounge, located at 9 LaPlanche Street.

Laura is a Kinesiologist as well as an avid golfer. She started golfing at 3 years old and began competing at age 7. She has since won the New Brunswick Women’s Amateur Tournament and their Mid-Amateur Tournament. She even went to University in Ontario on a Golf Scholarship!

All that to say, Laura knows golf! She decided to open Condor’s Golf Lounge (Condor is a hole-in-one in a par 5) so that she could share her passion for golf with the community and create a space to practice year-round.

“I wanted to create something for the local community to do, somewhere to connect and have fun.” Says Laura.

The lounge has two bays with Trackman systems installed; these are the globally recognized gold standard for golf simulation devices.

You can rent clubs or bring your own, and each bay is rented for $40/hour, no matter how many people playing together. There are hundreds of real-world courses to pick from, and the system gives you tonnes of statistics on your swing and game.

Condor’s is also open to kids until 8pm. They have super fun games for young people, including mini putt. They are happy to accommodate birthday parties and any other social event.

They have a kitchen which offers all the usual pub snacks and treats. They are also fully licensed serving local draft beer, wine and cocktails.

They are open 4pm – 10pm on Wednesdays, 4pm – 10pm on Thursdays (wing-night) 12pm – 12pm Fridays and Saturdays and 12pm – 8pm on Sundays.

To book your virtual tee time you can visit: www.yourgolfbooking.com and search for Amherst, or send them a message on Facebook or Instagram or call during open hours.

This Saturday, May 30th they will also have live music from 8pm – 11pm – to celebrate Laura’s birthday!
