ARTIST FEATURE | ROBERT DMYTRUK
Colour, pattern, shape and movement collide in the work of Robert Dmytruk.
Based in Summerland, BC, Robert has spent more than four decades as an artist and educator. Today, his studio practice pushes painting beyond the traditional canvas, combining elements of painting, collage and sculpture.
Works such as Chorus and Pentatonic are built through an intensive process of painting, cutting, sanding, arranging and layering individual shapes. Robert works with materials including gatorboard, paper, acrylic, oil and spray paint, finishing elements with synthetic resin. The result is a series of dimensional compositions that project from the wall and change depending on where you stand.
There is also a strong connection to music within this body of work. Robert began developing these three-dimensional paintings in 2020 while exchanging work with longtime friend, composer and musician Murray J. Reid. Rather than interpreting the music literally, Robert describes the pieces as a visual response to it — something that feels especially fitting when looking at works titled Chorus and Pentatonic.
Bright colour and playful pattern draw you in first, but up close there is another layer: edges, shadows, overlapping surfaces and carefully considered relationships between each form.
We’re pleased to have Robert’s work as part of the Ampersand Art Rentals & Sales collection and featured at Black Hills Winery.
Featured works, Chorus and Pentatonic are available through Ampersand - for rental or purchase.
