What comes to mind when you think of sheep? 🐑

For many people, sheep are often seen as a flock rather than as individuals. But here at the sanctuary, we get to know each one for exactly who they are.

Lincoln has always had a mischievous streak. Lola arrived as a tiny lamb who wasn't expected to survive and has grown into a thriving member of the Herd. Chloe needed round-the-clock bottle feedings when she was born, and now keeps us busy with her determination and growing confidence.

Like all animals, sheep experience fear, comfort, trust, and companionship. They build relationships, recognize familiar faces, and find security in being surrounded by those they know.

Animal Rights Awareness Week is a reminder that every sheep deserves a life free from fear and unnecessary suffering.

They deserve safety, kindness, and the opportunity to simply be sheep.

This week is Animal Rights Awareness Week, a time to think about the animals who are still used in industries that see them as products instead of individuals. 🐮

At The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary, we care for rescued farm animals who came from many different situations. Some were unwanted by the dairy industry, some were destined for slaughter, some were abandoned, and others simply needed a safe place to land.

When we look across the sanctuary, we see Pickles racing through the field with her usual zoomies, Gordie waiting patiently for breakfast, Winston trying to get Chloe to play, and Sparky standing under his favourite fruit tree, hoping for a scratch.

Today, their days are filled with choices. Grazing with friends, napping in the sunshine, making mud pits, exploring new corners of the farm, or following volunteers around when there might be treats involved.

For us, animal rights begins with recognizing something simple: farm animals are individuals. They have personalities, routines, friendships, and favourite things.

Every animal is someone, not something, and they show us that every single day. 🐮💙

Meet our newest goat, Remy. 🐐

Remy came to us at six years old with a bad hernia and no clear place to go.

He had been living with a herd of little minis, and by then he was just too big to stay with them. We needed a gentle goat friend for Percy, who was living with all the lambs and wasn’t quite suited for the big goat crew.

As soon as we met Remy, we knew.

He was shy at first and stuck close to the volunteers, crying a little while he figured things out. By the next day, he had settled right in beside Percy.

Remy arrived two days after Casey died, and we’ve always said she sent him to us.💙

This was a big day in the sheep, pig, and goat area. 🐐☀️

With temperatures pushing 30 degrees, a hardworking crew spent the day bringing in a new shelter and hauling the old one away. Watching a building suspended in the air and carefully lowered into place was pretty impressive.

The animals were safely tucked away on the other side of the fence, keeping a close eye on all the activity while the crew worked through the heat.

The old shelter served us well for many years, but we had outgrown it. This new one will give our animals more shade during the summer and a warm, dry place to escape the winter weather.

Half of the shelter will belong to Winston and Pickles, while the other half will be shared by Lincoln, Lola, Remy, and Percy. We have a feeling they'll settle in quickly.

We were able to afford this project because of our amazing donors. The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary relies entirely on donations, and improvements like this only happen because of people who choose to support the animals in our care.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this happen, from the crew working in the heat to the supporters who made the project possible. We can't wait to see our animals make themselves at home. 🐐💙
