A court ruling last week said something that should go without saying: people experiencing homelessness deserve dignity and real solutions — not just to be moved somewhere else.

In a landmark decision out of Waterloo, Judge Gibson formally recognized homelessness as a protected ground under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — the right to be free from discrimination. The judge was also direct: governments cannot take "an ostrich approach" to the crisis.

What this means in practice: if a government wants to close an encampment or remove services, it has an obligation to provide a genuine alternative — one that actually meets the needs of the people affected. Not just a different address. A real, supported option. For many people experiencing chronic homelessness, that means more than a housing unit. It means the wraparound supports that make stability possible.

This ruling matters for communities across the country, including ours. Addressing homelessness isn't optional — it's a legal and moral obligation, and one that no single order of government can meet alone.

But these recognized rights might already be under attack. Premier Ford has indicated he may invoke section 33 of the Charter — the notwithstanding clause — to override the Waterloo ruling if the Region's appeal fails. Section 33 allows governments to temporarily suspend certain Charter rights, including equality rights, for up to five years.

Haircuts. Community. Seedlings in the sun. 🌱

These aren't extras — they're what it looks like when someone has a safe place to land and people who show up for them.

At 928 Sydenham Rd in Kingston, our patrons are tending their first garden, cleaning up their neighbourhood, and finding their footing — together.

Our Ground Up garden project is growing, and it needs your support to keep going. Every dollar helps us build something that belongs to everyone here.

Doors of Compassion’s Own Your Story workshop is now underway! A reminder for all registered participants that sessions are taking place in the Sanctuary.

Led by award-winning filmmaker and storyteller Troy Crossfield, this small group experience supports participants in exploring their personal stories, building confidence, and connecting through creative expression in a safe, supportive space.

Over six sessions, participants are building skills and reflecting together, with the option to share their story at a community storytelling evening.

🗓 Upcoming Sessions
May 4 & 6
May 11 & 14

⏰ 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
📍 CFCO Sanctuary (158 Harwood Ave, Ajax)

✔ Small cohort
✔ Snacks provided
✔ No storytelling experience needed

Participants are expected to attend all sessions.

While we wish new participants could join, the sessions build on one another and registration is now closed. We encourage the community to join us for a public storytelling showcase on May 28 (6-8 PM), a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the voices and stories emerging from this program.
