Airdrie Public Library officials say preliminary compliance estimates tied to Bill 28 could require a review of about 65,000 library items and create at least $135,000 in one-time labour costs alone.

The estimate does not include other expected costs, including administrative overhead, physical changes to the facility or ID-verification technology.

Council accepted the library’s presentation for information Tuesday.

Bill 28 concerns are headed to Airdrie council Tuesday, as Airdrie Public Library asks council to support local authority over library operations and services.

The proposed resolution also asks for provincial consultation with libraries, municipalities and library boards before regulations are finalized, and for dedicated funding if new operational requirements are imposed.
