Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
And I’ve been thinking about something all day.
I happened to be at church today, and the priest spoke about how Jesus gives commands and people instinctively think it’s not for them to say or do something. They respond with: “Who, me?”
And the answer is: yes. You.
And no, this post isn’t about religion, and it’s not about preaching (I know that doesn’t resonate with everyone) but it is about compassion and calling out cruelty. So tonight, as I think about who is going to say something in our community about this day and the increasing division, I hear a voice that says “who, me?”
Yes. Me.
And I hope it’s you, too.
Because behind every political argument or online comment section are actual human beings. People’s children. People’s friends. People trying to move through the world feeling safe, accepted, and loved.
And the truth is, the world can already be unbelievably harsh.
I have known people who struggled deeply with rejection, isolation, fear, and hopelessness. I have known families terrified of losing someone they love. Words and cruelty carry more weight than we sometimes realize.
So today, I simply want to say this to members of Airdrie’s 2SLGBTQ+ community: you matter here.
You deserve dignity. You deserve kindness. You deserve to feel safe in your own community.
Life is heavy enough already. Most people are worried about affordability, healthcare, their families, the future, and sometimes just getting through the day. We do not need to make life harder for vulnerable people.
You do not have to fully understand someone’s life to treat them with compassion. Let’s at least start with that.
