Hope for Korah

Hope for Korah Breaking the cycle of extreme poverty and offering hope and a future to vulnerable children and families living in Korah, Ethiopia.

We provide holistic care through education, physical, spiritual, psycho-social, and economic empowerment. Our vision is to break the cycle of extreme poverty and to offer hope and a better future to the vulnerable children and families living in Korah, Ethiopia. Hope for Korah implements a comprehensive approach towards transformational development. Our plan centers primarily on building up the po

orest families in the community, empowering them to grow, to generate income, and to help their children excel at life and school. To do so, we provide the whole family with holistic care including physical, spiritual, psycho-social, educational, and economic empowerment. We strive to keep families healthy and together, acting through the love and compassion of Christ so that each person can come to know their inherent worth, meet their full potential, live with dignity, and become self-reliant, bringing long-term sustainable change to the Korah community at large. We are committed to serving and empowering the people of Korah as we come alongside Ethiopian staff, leaders, the Korah community and local government supporting them in their vision and dreams for their people. We seek to live out our values of sustainability and cultural competency. To achieve this, HFK dedicates its efforts to an attainable and permanent strategy through our operational agreement with the Ethiopian government, collaboration with our Ethiopian staff and creating local partnerships that further our impact for training, resources, program linkages and experience-sharing connections. All HFK programs are administered by Ethiopians and we employ more than 50 staff, many of whom live within the Korah community. Our partnership and multifaceted approach have proven to be an effective and powerful advocacy combination that has yielded tangible and ongoing results. All that we do centers around holistic care and the process of transformational development, which we believe can impact the entire community of Korah, Ethiopia.

Every year on World Bicycle Day, we give a huge shoutout to PL and Kristen Meindertsma with Cycle 5 To Survive for using their passion for cycling to create meaningful change around the world.

But this year is EXTRA special because we're getting ready to welcome them to Africa for Ride #4 of their incredible journey!

Their mission continues:
• 5 epic rides
• Across 5 continents
• In 5 years
• For 5 meaningful charities (HFK is thrilled to be one of them!)

Thank you Cycle 5 to Survive , for your dedication, determination, and heart for making a difference. We can't wait to welcome you to Korah and for you to see firsthand the youth and families whose lives are being impacted through your hard work and support.

Youth programs you have worked so hard to support.

In our Berta Breakfast Program, children receive a cup of milk with their breakfast three times a week to help them grow up healthy, strong, and ready to learn.

Starting this year, the fortified flour used to make our Berta pancakes now includes powdered milk, adding even more nutrition (and a little extra goodness!) for our growing students before they head off to school.

We’re so thankful that, through your support of the Berta Breakfast Program, our children are able to enjoy milk!

A heartfelt thank you to H.E. Mr. Stian Christensen, the Norwegian Ambassador, his successor, and the wonderful delegation from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa for visiting Hope for Korah this past week. We were truly honored to host you all.

The visit was a meaningful opportunity to see firsthand the transformation taking place through projects supported by the Diplomatic Spouse Group (DSG). Over the past several years, the Norwegian Embassy has been a cornerstone supporter of this work, and we are deeply grateful for this partnership.

Through three rounds of DSG funding, together we have been able to strengthen key areas of our empowerment programming:

• Equipping the Hope for Korah daycare, creating a safe and nurturing space for children while enabling mothers to work and participate in training programs.

• Expanding the Basket Weaving Cooperative, helping women build sustainable livelihoods while preserving a beautiful traditional craft.

• Launching a Mental Health Care Support Program focused on trauma healing and leadership coaching for young leaders within HFK.

What makes this partnership especially meaningful is the trust-based approach behind it. Rather than fitting organizations into rigid frameworks, the DSG model allows local communities to identify real needs and develop solutions from within.

Beyond funding, the DSG has also helped create valuable market connections for our basket weaving cooperative by introducing our artisans to buyers within the Addis diplomatic community, opening doors toward long-term sustainability.

On behalf of the entire Hope for Korah family, our artisans, youth, mothers, and children, thank you to the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Diplomatic Spouse Group for your encouragement, partnership, and belief in community-led transformation.

- It is often difficult to ask you to pray for certain situations involving some of the very vulnerable and struggling people in our program, without being able to share more personal details. We are deeply grateful for your continued prayers and can see how God is truly responding.

Over the past few weeks, many people have been praying for a mother and her baby in our program who have been missing, and we have witnessed God’s goodness and mercy in powerful ways. We are grateful that prayers have been answered, and that this mother is now safely back in Korah. Our team has been able to reconnect with her to offer ongoing support, encouragement, and prayer.

We also ask for prayer for peace and restoration within this family’s home. Pray that our staff would be guided with wisdom and compassion as they continue to surround this family with care and support.

Finally, please pray for this mother, who is a new believer. She has faced challenges and resistance from those around her because of her new faith, and we pray that she would be deeply strengthened by God’s love, peace, and presence in her life.

Growing in character, one fruit at a time!

Our youth are discovering the Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. They're learning that these aren't just words, but life skills God wants them to use every day - in their families, at school, and in their communities.

This is how our mornings start at the daycare!

How do you start your mornings?

Meet Kenean

Kenean (left) is one of HFK's youth social workers, working closely with female students, mentoring, guiding, counselling, and supporting them as they grow. She helps students stay motivated and committed to their studies through regular check-ins, and by working alongside them to develop clear plans and personal goals.

Kenean has been with HFK since her university years, when she first began volunteering with the youth program. Since then, she has remained deeply connected to the work and the girls she serves. Kenean finds it especially meaningful to be part of each girl’s journey. “It’s encouraging to watch them start to believe in themselves, start dreaming bigger, and take steps towards their better future.”

She also values the supportive environment and the shared mission of empowering families. “It feels like more than just a workplace—it’s a place where I live out my purpose and make a real difference in the lives of these children.”

- This Wednesday, we humbly ask you to join us in prayer for a very special and vital training currently taking place within our Education and Youth Empowerment Program. We have been blessed to welcome a gifted, experienced, and professional counsellor who is leading basic psychosocial training for our youth. Over the coming weeks, she will also be investing her expertise into coaching and mentoring our dedicated HFK counsellors and social workers.

As our team sits with youth, they are stepping into difficult places — listening to, carrying, and sharing the heavy burdens and daily struggles many youth in Korah face. It is beautiful but heavy work. Please join us in praying for:

• Wisdom, inspiration, and energy for our guest counsellor as she leads these important training and coaching sessions.

• Strength and emotional protection for our counsellors and social workers as they carry these burdens with grace and compassion.

• Open hearts for our youth throughout this process, and that this training would mark the beginning of lasting healing in their lives.

Update: Thank you for praying for the mother and baby who fled their home in recent weeks. We are grateful to share that they are now safe and have returned to Korah.

One of the most exciting outcomes we see through our Family Empowerment Program is the number of women who complete vocational training and go on to secure meaningful employment. For many, this is a life-changing step toward stability, confidence, and long-term self-sufficiency for themselves and their families.

To continue supporting them in their employment journeys, we provide employment refresher training throughout the year. These sessions are an important opportunity for the women to strengthen workplace skills, stay focused on their goals, and encourage one another through shared experiences. They also create space for honest conversations about the real challenges they may be facing in the workplace, while celebrating the progress and successes they have achieved along the way.

These photos are from one of our recent employment refresher training sessions with women in our program.
