Grafting and Budding Techniques Training

Home of Indigenous Arts Belize Limited, in partnership with the Toledo Agriculture Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, successfully conducted grafting and budding training for 30 participants, including youths, women, and men from 9 communities in the Toledo District. Our participants learnt about root selection, scion preparation, bud wood selection and tools needed to do grafting or budding that support plants to decrease time for yielding or improving plant production.

A theoretical-to-practical approach enhanced the skills of our participants. Guided support was provided by the Agriculture team so each participant completed the budding and grafting of cacao, using bud wood from three species of cacao trees (Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario).

Our goal is to teach a skill to preserve indigenous food systems with potential economic benefits. We extend our gratitude for the support and technical skills of the Agriculture team under the leadership of Mr. Denzel Castillo, District Agriculture Coordinator. Special remarks were delivered by our President, Mrs. Marcelia Assi and Mr. Leonel Requena, National Coordinator-GEF SGP at the certification to recognize the dedication of all our participants.

This training was supported by The GEF Small Grants Programme - Belize implemented by UNDP Belize.

We are excited to continue our school engagement with the brilliant students of Santa Cruz RC School!

Our President and Peace Corps Volunteer led an exciting educational session on climate change, environmental protection, and preserving cultural heritage. To ensure students enhance their learning, they visited our plant nursery to learn and engage in soil preparation, soil mixtures, seed sowing, and seedling transplanting in Santa Cruz.

A huge thank you to our artisan members for supporting us today. Mrs. Raquel and our youth member, Hansel, showed the children how to extract seedlings and maintain a plant nursery.Today was an excellent day because the students were inspired to continue with planting initiatives.

Our gratitude to the teacher, administration and parents of Santa Cruz RC for allowing the opportunity to teach students how they can engage in climate resilient actions.

Climate Education- Climate Actions to Preserve Cultural Heritage

We recently hosted our very first school engagement with the brilliant students of San Pedro Columbia RC School!

Our President and Peace Corps Volunteer led an exciting educational session on climate change, environmental protection, and preserving cultural heritage. The students didn't just listen—they got their hands dirty! They visited our plant nursery to learn and engage in soil preparation, seed sowing, and seedling transplanting. An opportunity to learn skills.

A huge thank you to Ms. Cirilia Chee and our youth member, Fermin Chen, for taking the students on a walk through of their backyard food system to show how a variety of trees can thrive together. They also planted jippijappa to restore this essential source of food and crafting material.

Thank you to all the participants, parents, teachers, and school administration for a successful first event! We look forward to work with the school's green club to have students growing and planting their own trees. Our goal is to keep collaborating with schools to inspire and empower youth-led climate action and cultural preservation.

Women Leading Women

September 18, 2026

Our President, Mrs. Marcelia Assi is proud to introduce our Peace Corp Volunteer, Mrs. Kim Murphy to our members, our programs and projects. Home of Indigenous Arts Belize Limited created a secondary project with Peace Corp Belize to have their support to strengthen our work for a period of 12 months. As a result, our Volunteer Mrs. Kim is officially onboard.

Mrs. Kim, enjoyed her first day in the field understanding how we work with our members, their volunteer work and our Executive Committee to implement projects to impact and improve livelihoods.

Mrs. Kim has surely "hit the ground" embracing the resilience we have built and looks forward to support. Therefore, she will commence leading delivery of exciting activities in capacity building and education in the coming weeks.

We extend our thanks to Board members for always being on the grounds with us too. Ms. Chen and Ms. Chuck spent the day with us in San Lucas, Mabil ha and Aguacate to follow up with our members there while introducing Mrs. Kim.

Thank you Mrs. Kim for choosing Home of Indigenous Arts Belize Limited.

BCCI 30th Anniversary (Expo Belize Marketplace)

On behalf of our two elderly artisan members volunteers and team, we extend our appreciation to The GEF Small Grants Programme - Belize implemented by UNDP Belize for providing immediate support for our attendance at the Expo.

It is these partnerships that continue to empower women and their families to promote their work, skills, and authentic products to secure income for their households.

The commitment of our members to prepare and deliver engaging discussions to our booth visitors provides them with confidence that their stories to preserve Indigenous arts and nature-positive livelihoods are possible with support.

Visitors were impressed to know that women are leading our first reforestation initiative to sustain crafting resources with the support of the GEF SGP through our project, Crafting Resilience: Preserving Cultural Heritage and Improving Livelihoods. Our project is ongoing and has seen impactful results so far.

We thank the National Coordinator, Mr. Leonel Requena, for always providing guidance as we progress with our project to support our artisan members.
