Crocodile Research Coalition A non-profit organization committed to the preservation of crocodiles and associated wildlife through community involvement, education, and research.

The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) is a Belize-based nonprofit that seeks to conserve crocodiles, their habitat, and adjacent wildlife throughout Central America through research, education, and most importantly, community involvement. We believe that community involvement is the cornerstone to the success of conservation of crocodilians and their habitat, and intend to work alongside with local communities in all faucets of research and education. Additionally, we work with the local governments and various other wildlife and conservation organizations nationally and internationally to further the conservation management of crocodiles and their habitat The CRC believe that the conservation success of crocodiles is not only dependent on direct conservation efforts of the focal species, but also understanding how crocodiles interact with its environment and other wildlife as thriving and long-lasting conservation management is dependent on preserving the integrity of ecological interactions. Thus, through our research center in southern Belize, we will facilitate research projects of crocodiles, as well as the surrounding flora and fauna. Additionally, we will provide state-of-the-art facilities and lodging to researchers and academic groups nationally and internationally who wish to pursue wildlife and conservation research.

CROCtober 6, 2026: Ever looked across the water at night and seen a pair of glowing eyes staring back at you? 🔦👀✨

Don’t panic… it’s not a crocodile 👻 ghost.

That eerie eye-shine 👁️ comes from a specialized reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum✨, which helps crocodilians see in low-light conditions.

Nature can be WAY scarier — and WAY cooler — than fiction.

CROCtober 4, 2026: Think crocodiles are just mindless eating machines? 👀💀

MYTH. BUSTED.

Crocodilians are intelligent, highly adapted predators capable of learning, remembering, communicating, solving problems, and responding to cues.

There’s WAY more to these ancient reptiles than meets the eye. 🐊🧠

CROCtober 3, 2026: Today, CROCtober is taking us to West Africa! Myth vs. Fact: Crocodile Bile

Crocodiles have long held an important place in the cultures and traditions of communities across West Africa. Alongside this rich cultural history, fascinating beliefs and stories about crocodiles have also been passed down through generations.

Today’s CROCtober explores one of those beliefs and what scientific research tells us about it.

Learning about wildlife also means understanding the stories, traditions, and knowledge surrounding these incredible animals and separating long-held beliefs from what research has found.

CROCtober 2, 2026: Are Belize’s crocodiles man-eaters?

Crocodiles are often misunderstood and feared due to their appearance, reputation as predators, sensationalization by media and Hollywood, and lingering fear stemming from the colonial era as Europeans lacked the education to coexist with these animals compared to the local indigenous.

While crocodiles in Belize are wild animals capable of defending themselves, our two species, the Morelet's and American crocodile, do not actively hunt humans as prey. Most negative interactions happen when people and crocodiles share the same spaces or when natural behaviors are disrupted.

Learning about crocodile behavior helps us replace fear with understanding, and promotes safer coexistence between people and wildlife.

Respect the wildlife. Protect the habitat. Share the waters.

It takes a village to create successful conservation, and ensure animal welfare.

Last week, the Primus Villas team came out to CRC’s Placencia Lagoon Nature Center to lend a hand with some much-needed maintenance for our crocodile ambassador habitats, including planting new vegetation within their enclosures.

But their visit was about more than getting their hands dirty. They had the opportunity to meet our crocodile ambassadors, learn their individual stories, and understand why these magnificent animals are in human care.

Too often, crocodiles are misunderstood or feared. Education gives us the opportunity to replace those misconceptions with understanding—helping people appreciate their important ecological and cultural roles and why protecting them matters.

Conservation isn’t something one organization can do alone. It takes businesses, communities, scientists, volunteers, educators, and people willing to show up and help.

Every hand makes a difference. Every connection builds understanding. And together, we create a better future for wildlife AND communities.

Thank you Primus Villas for being part of our village!

Help Us Support One of Our Own

We have a favor to ask of our CRC community.

Marvin, who is one of our primary community researchers, and his partner are facing an unexpected financial burden while navigating his cancer treatment. They recently received a second bill from the cancer center after being informed that the first bill had been miscalculated.

No family should have to carry the weight of something like this alone.

At the CRC, we take care of our own. Marvin has given his time, dedication, and heart to our work and mission, and now we’re asking our community to come together and give some of that support back to him and his family.

If you’re able to donate, any amount – big or small – can make a difference and help ease some of the financial pressure while Marvin focuses on what matters most: his health and his recovery.

If you’re unable to donate, sharing this post can help us reach someone who can. 💚

Thank you for standing with Marvin, his family, and the CRC family.

Every bit of support means more than you know.
