Did you know Maya civilizations referred to the jaguar as "balam," meaning "king?" 🐆 👑

Jaguars have long been a significant part of Belizean culture and history. The Maya revered jaguars as sacred animals and their images can be found in ancient stone ruins.

Today in Belize, the loss of habitat and increased hunting of jaguar prey species have led to increased survival pressure for the jaguar population. It's estimated that only 800 - 1000 individuals currently remains.
