A historic commitment worth remembering. 🇧🇿🖤🤍💛
In July 1999, the Government of Belize and the National Garifuna Council signed this Memorandum of Understanding, establishing important commitments to consultation, protection of Garifuna lands and culture, good-faith negotiations on customary land rights, and cooperation in the development of Garifuna communities.

More than 27 years later, this MOU remains an important foundation as NGC and the Government work toward a revised and strengthened agreement that responds to the realities and aspirations of Garinagu today. As we move forward, we also remember where the journey began.

Today, the National Garifuna Council met with Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño and senior members of the Government of Belize at the Office of the Prime Minister in Belmopan. At the centre of the discussion was the revised GOB–NGC Memorandum of Understanding, which provides a framework for addressing critical priorities including Indigenous recognition of Garinagu, ancestral land rights, preservation of Garifuna language and culture, equitable participation in governance, and sustainable economic development.

The meeting resulted in important commitments, including continued review of the revised MOU toward its eventual signing, Government support for Garifuna Settlement Day 2026, and the inclusion of Gulisi Community Primary School in the National Healthy Start Feeding Programme.

NGC welcomes this renewed dialogue and looks forward to transforming today's commitments into meaningful action for Garinagu in Belize and throughout the diaspora.
