The Caye Caulker Humane Society (CCHS) was created in 2009 to benefit the animals of the island. We are a non-profit and are completely funded by the good people of Caye Caulker and the many visitors that stop by to see us, help and donate. Even our vet, Dr. Zeke DVM, works our clinics for free. Our Board of Directors is three people made up of residents of Caye Caulker. Next to that we have a handful of volunteers, living here full time, part time or just visiting. ANIMAL CLINIC
The main part of our organization is our animal clinic where we perform basic care and prevention. For example, flea, tick and heartworm prevention, treating heartworm, mange and tick fever, give DHLPP and rabies vaccinations and we diagnose and treat many other ailments such as mites, worms and wounds. About every other month we organize a spay & neuter day, mainly for dogs. Next to that, we run a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program for cats for about 6 months of the year. Our Clinic is open every Saturday between 9am and 11am. WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER
We are of the belief that there is no real need for one as most of the dogs that are on the streets have a home/owner although roaming free. The few real stray dogs that you see are doing very well with our ‘Care in the Community’ approach as we all watch out and care for this handful of strays. We bring them in to get fixed, washed and give them tick and flea treatments when necessary/possible. We are also sure that they would rather live on the beach in paradise and make friends with the visitors and locals than sit in a cage for 23 hours a day. WHAT ELSE DO WE DO?
- Education about health and behavior of pets, either at the clinic, during school visits or just on the street.
- Help by adopting & fostering of homeless and/or sick dogs.
- Give out health certificates for traveling pets. HOW DO WE PAY FOR EVERYTHING?
- Pet owners that pay/donate for meds and services at our clinic.
- There are several donation boxes at businesses on the island.
- Donations through our website & cash donations.
- Donations through Amazon Smile and Facebook Fundraisers.
- Visitors bringing goodies.
- Charities, like Project Vets, sending us equipment.
- Fundraisers, like a dog wash on the beach or chili cook off.
