CACHE Benque Promoting beauty and goodness through art and culture;
Building on the past to transform the future

The Cultural & Historical Association of Benque Viejo (CHAB) was integrated in 1992 with the objective of preserving and promoting Maya-Mestizo aspects of Belizean culture and history in western Belize. CHAB worked hand in hand with the National Arts Council and the Department of Museums, Belize. In addition, the association was able to obtain membership status with the Commonwealth Association of Museums (CAM) and the Museum Association of the Caribbean (MAC), and twinned with the Uxbridge-Scott (Ontario, Canada) Museum and Historical Society. On January 1999, CHAB entered a period of transition in which it sought to organise the artists in the area along the structures of a formal entity referred to as the Community of Artists – Benque Viejo. The decision arose upon the move of the Government of Belize to establish Houses of Culture throughout the country. On January 15, 2000, the Community of Artists merged to establish the Community of Artists for Cultural & Historical Endeavours (CACHE). CACHE has been registered in Belize as a not for profit, non-governmental organization. This group has become the support organisation for the House of Culture of Benque Viejo del Carmen. To this effect, it has incorporated the objectives of its parent entities to promote and preserve the cultural heritage and history of the western communities in Belize through artistic expressions. Vision:
To be a highly motivated capable and sustainable organization recognized for increasing knowledge and awareness of local history and culture and for contributing to a vibrant and enriched cultural life in Benque and surrounding areas.

“The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love [and unity]. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”
― Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Toward the Future

May 28, 2026 - CACHE and the Benque Viejo Town Council under Mayor Rosales renew its MOU with its mission of bringing our objectives of art promotion, cultural retrieval, sustainable development and heritage to fruition. The MOU is another milestone in the narrative of CACHE as an organic movement begun in 1992 in its intent to partner with local government in making our common home a better place. We congratulate our current president, Mr. Julio Llinas, in speeding up the process of renewing our alliance with the town council.

Consolidating partnerships: Our newly installed president Julio A. Llinas spearheaded the delegation that traveled to Belize City to reaffirm CACHE's partnership with NICH and the Mexican Institute of Culture (Embassy of Mexico). Our delegates (President Julio, Councilor Doris Pat, SG David Ruiz) met with newly installed NICH President Albert Vaughan and Museum & HOC Coordinator Ilona Smiling at the House of Culture (Belize City). The delegates then visited with Attache Lic. Alberto Salamanca at the Mexican Institute of Culture to discuss ways of exchange exchange and collaboration. Both visits seek to reaffirm long standing bonds of cooperation, mutuality, and fraternity between CACHE, NICH, and the Mexican Embassy. Councilor Pat presented our hosts with gifts of produce from Benque (including w**e and preserves from our own CACHE-ra Flor Contreras), while president Julio took the opportunity to invite our hosts for a visit to Benque Viejo (Wednesday, 18 February 2026)
