Belmopan Humane Society "Striving to improve the quality of life for citizens and animals and to contribute to a safer and healthier environment" was created. Please give generously.

Our History

October 2004: A seed of an idea and a lot of paperwork. December 2004: Belmopan Humane Society was incorporated and certified. Our objectives were set and we submitted our application to the City Council to allocate land for an animal hurricane shelter. April 2005: The first Belmopan Humane Society Pet Fair was held at the Governor General Field which included a Pet Show and free rabies clinic. December 2005: The first edition of our quarterly newsletter B.A.R.K.S. The Society bought and renovated an old school bus, slowly transforming it into a mobile clinic. Our bus goes with us to social functions and serves as an educational tool or as a mobile animal health clinic for the outlying villages and on the BHS property. February 29 2006: Our 99 year lease to one acre of land was officially handed over and clearing began. October 2007: We are officially a registered NGO. December 2007: The land is cleared, leveled and is high and dry. Three sides are fenced with five fenced dog pens complete with gates, and cement pads for dog houses. We have a shed with a rain water vat and a large tool shed erected on the property. March 2008: After much creative fund raising and volunteer work, the fencing around the one acre property is complete. We have had two picnic tables donated and landscaping has begun. To date we have used the dog run area as emergency shelter for 4 dogs, all who have been adopted out to great homes. Belmopan City Council donated a truck-load of limestone chippings used for the driveway, dog pens and pathways. Educational Outreach Programs include health clinics, annual attendance at University of Belize kick off party and Belmopan Day, dog training classes, our newsletter with many articles, and one on one person to person knowledge-sharing and assistance. Fund raising activities to date include: Pet Fairs, Belmopan Day activities, Bake Sales, Luau night, Dog Wash, Demolition Derby, Dog Shows, Alice in Wonderland Tea Parties and a Valentine's Cocktail Party. We also have on loan to the public (for a small donation), Elizabethan collars for post operative care and pet carriers, and there are donation cans at some business establishments.

Sunday, September 13th, our Belmopan Humane Society monthly Spay & Neuter Clinic got to work — 12 animals sterilized: 7 cats and 5 dogs and one baby that needed a checkup ASAP. 🐶🐱

These steady, monthly clinics may not always make the biggest splash on social media, but they make a big dent over time. Every animal sterilized means fewer unwanted litters and another step toward reducing the overpopulation of dogs and cats in our communities. And let’s be clear — we don't only serve Belmopan.

Our clinics assist caring pet owners and rescuers from Belize City, Mahogany Heights, Frank's Eddy, St. Matthews, Armenia, Dangriga and other communities across Belize. They understand that responsible pet ownership includes keeping their animals healthy, safe and under control. For many, their dogs help watch over their property, while their cats help keep rodents under control. They value these animals and want to do what is right for them.

Our volunteers understand the importance of this work — and they show up! A huge thank you to Dr. Orlando Baptist and his assistant Romelio, who continue to work tirelessly through these clinics. They are machines when it comes to getting those surgeries done!

We also continue to administer free rabies vaccinations, made possible through the support of the Ministry of Health, Public Health Department. We appreciate the partnership that helps us keep our communities and animals safer.

About those who say “The Humane Society doesn't help…” We do.

But here's the part that sometimes gets overlooked: we can only help the people and animals who actually take advantage of the help being offered. Our clinics require owners and rescuers to respond to emails, keep appointments and participate.

And if you emailed us and didn't receive a response, please check the email address you provided and make sure it is one you actually monitor. If you need assistance, contact us directly rather than assuming that no one is responding. Constructive communication helps.

We are targeting one street, one neighbourhood and one village at a time. We may not be able to reach every animal at once, but we will keep pushing these clinics forward for those who need them. Because at the end of the day, 12 animals this Sunday matters.
And the next 12 matter too.
And the 12 after that.

UPDATE: A BHS volunteer headed over after work to help get him out, but unfortunately, the dog was no longer in the drain and could not be located in the immediate area.

Our hope is that someone was able to safely assist him. If anyone spots him wandering nearby or sees him back in the drain, please message us with his location so we can follow up.

---

There's a dog stuck in a drain between Toledo Street and Stann Creek Street in Belmopan. He is wearing a collar and appears to belong to someone, but he's in poor condition and clearly wants to get out.

A few kind community members have already tried to help him out, but he isn't allowing anyone to approach or assist him at this time.

If you're able to help, or if you recognize this dog and know his owners, please reach out to us right away!

🐾 Adoption Options🐾

Every one of these sweet faces is waiting for the same thing: a family to call their own. 💛

🐕 Chewie (5 yrs) and 🐈 Maggie (4 yrs) have been in foster care with us for a long while now. They've been patient, they've been loved, and they're still hoping their forever person is out there. Chewie is a loyal, happy girl with the best smile in Belmopan, and Maggie is a small friend with a very big heart.

🧡 Clark, 🤎 Clio, and 🖤 Calliope are our newest little ones! All 4 months old, these kittens came to us needing care and have now completed their rehabilitation. They are healthy, playful, and ready for their new homes.

✅ All of our rescues are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed before adoption.

Think one of them might be the right fit for your family? Fill out our online adoption form and one of our volunteers will get back to you as soon as possible:
