Our team at TASA had the honor of welcoming the Belize City Mayor and Belize City Council team to Turneffe Atoll, part of our ongoing effort to bring the community out to the waters that protect and provide for them every day. And it seems Turneffe wanted to make a first impression as a pod of dolphins greeted the team on arrival, setting the tone for an unforgettable day. Together, we snorkeled the stunning reefs of Turneffe, the Witconcrete Wreck, drifting over vibrant corals and marine life that few ever get to witness up close.
But this trip was about more than beauty. It was about understanding Turneffe as Belize City's Natural Asset, Economic Engine, and Conservation Imperative.
𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭: Turneffe's reef and mangroves are Belize City's first line of defense, breaking the force of storms before they ever reach our shores.
𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞:From the fishers who feed their families to the tour operators who welcome the world, Turneffe drives livelihoods across our city and Belize.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: As the largest coral atoll in the Western Hemisphere, Turneffe is a world-class treasure worth protecting!
None of this would have been possible without the support of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust for helping us to connect our city's leaders to the ecosystem that shields and sustains us all. When the people who guide our city understand what's at stake, we all move closer to protecting it.
