This storm, beside bringing unbelievable and totally unexpected damage to our country, has also been a huge eye opener for many, including me. A huge, traumatising one. No matter how well we prepare - or think that we prepare - for a storm, we never know until it hits us, the total devastation and upheaval it can bring to our lives and the lives of our children.
We've been talking to several families that were impacted extremely heavily, and to say it's heartbreaking listening to them and hearing them cry, is an understatement. These are humble, hardworking, good people who were already struggling, and the hurricane has left them reeling - numb - not sure how to even begin to pick up the pieces and move forward.
We'll be bringing you these stories one by one.... these people need URGENT help.... and while all of us received damages in the storm, some lost everything. Every single thing. Imagine how you would feel in this situation. A particular story made me cry this morning, as this is someone I know personally, a mother who works 24/7 to provide for her family, and who is always helping others in need. I've always admired her for this, and for her positive, sunny outlook on life.
What do you do when your entire house collapses around you, and you are left with nothing? Nothing. All you have time to do is run with your children for shelter. What do you do when you cook for a living - and you're a damn great cook - this is how you make your living - and your refridge, stove, pots, cookware, EVERYTHING is gone? And you're forced to seek shelter at someone's house with just the clothes on your back and your childrens' backs? What do you do? How can you even help yourself to begin to bounce back from this? How? Tell me.
Our people need immediate help... groceries, mattresses, sheets, pillows, clothes, baby food, baby pampers, baby items, plywood, pallets - just about everything needed to start rebuilding their properties and lives. PLEASE HELP!
