🇧🇿 Happy 10th of September! 🇧🇿

Today, Belize commemorates the Battle of St. George’s Caye, one of the most significant events in our nation’s history.

On September 10, 1798, the Baymen and other defenders of the settlement successfully resisted a Spanish attempt to take control of the area. The confrontation was part of a wider conflict between Britain and Spain, and the Spanish fleet had begun arriving in the area earlier in September. The defenders used their knowledge of the reefs, waterways, and surrounding coastline to strengthen their position.

The battle was not simply an event involving the British settlers. Free Black people and enslaved Africans also played important roles in the defense, including serving aboard gun flats and assisting with the settlement’s preparations. This is an important part of the historical story that deserves to be remembered and acknowledged.

The Spanish withdrawal marked the last major Spanish attempt to remove the settlers by force, and St. George’s Caye became a defining symbol in the history of the settlement that eventually became Belize. The events of 1798 are commemorated every year on September 10 as a national holiday.

As we celebrate The Tenth, let us remember the people, struggles, sacrifices, and complex history that helped shape our country. Let us continue to honor our heritage while looking toward a stronger and more united Belize.

Happy St. George’s Caye Day, Belize! 🇧🇿💙❤️

🌎 Global Week of Action on NCDs | Leadership in Focus

We are proud to be featured by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition as part of the Global Week of Action on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

This campaign reminds us that leadership on NCDs means moving from awareness and commitments to meaningful action—investing in prevention, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging early screening, and ensuring support for people living with NCDs.

As the Belize Diabetes and Hypertension Association, we remain committed to contributing to healthier communities and strengthening the fight against NCDs in Belize and across the Caribbean.

It’s time to Lead on NCDs. 🇧🇿💙

A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest,
It broke our hearts to see you go,
God only takes the best.

They say that memories are golden,
Well maybe that is true,
But we never wanted memories,
We only wanted you.

Your life was love and labour,
Your love for your family true,
You did your best for all of us,
We will always remember you.

We sat beside your bedside,
Our hearts were crushed and sore,
We did our duty to the end,
‘Til we could do no more.

In tears we watched you sinking,
We watched you fade away,
And though our hearts were breaking,
We knew you could not stay.

Our lips cannot speak how we loved you,
Our hearts cannot tell what to say,
But God only knows how we miss you,
In our home that is lonely today.

Milagro Garel your work here on earth is done. Rest in God’s comfort and grace that he had prepared for you 🪻

💙 Education & Screening with BELIFA 💙

The Belize Diabetes Association was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with members of Belize Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (BELIFA) at the Edward “Ned” Pitts Olympic House, Marion Jones Complex, Belize City, for an engaging diabetes education and screening session.

Our team had the opportunity to educate participants about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, including the differences between the two, signs and symptoms, risk factors, prevention, and the importance of early detection and proper diabetes management.

Participants also had the opportunity to have their blood glucose levels tested and to ask questions about diabetes, healthy lifestyle choices, and ways to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.

At the Belize Diabetes Association, we believe that education, awareness, and early detection can make a difference. Through community outreach and health education, we continue to empower individuals to take charge of their health and make informed decisions.

A special thank you to BELIFA for welcoming the Belize Diabetes Association and for providing an opportunity to promote health, wellness, and diabetes awareness among its members! 🇧🇿💙

Together, we can build a healthier Belize!

Pedal for prevention: Gear up against diabetes.

Our annual ride is here again. An event that not only aim to spread awareness on diabetes but to also support a cause: a healthy living. As diabetics, we should all be living a healthy life. But not because you are a diabetic means that you should start living healthy. It should be something that you are doing from now.

So gear up your bike, and pedal for prevention against diabetes. As a chronic condition cannot be cured, but it can be prevented.
