As we count down to World Mental Health Day, we're sharing reflections from young people who are helping to break the silence around mental health and encourage open, honest conversations.

Today, hear from Richard Martinez, UNICEF Regional Youth Advocate, as he shares his thoughts on the importance of mental well-being and why checking in with ourselves and others matters.

Taking time to listen, support one another, and seek help when needed are important steps toward building stronger, healthier communities. Mental health is a part of our overall health, and no one should have to face challenges alone.

This World Mental Health Day, let's start the conversation, check in with those around us, and create spaces where young people feel heard, supported, and understood.

Not every message a child receives is dangerous.
But some are.
Sexual abuse involving technology can begin in everyday interactions, with classmates, friends, familiar adults and complete strangers. It can escalate before a child fully understands what's happening.

No child should have to navigate these moments alone. Keeping children safe online starts with open conversations at home, safer platforms, stronger protections and support systems that are there when families need them.

Our School Safety Leaders from Golden Stream, Indian Creek, Big Falls, and San Pedro Columbia Primary Schools are strengthening their safety skills through a risk mapping exercise. Working together, they identified potential hazards around their schools, explored areas that may be vulnerable during an emergency, and discussed practical ways to reduce risks and make their learning environment safer.

UNICEF is supporting these initiatives as part of our efforts to demonstrate how children can play an active role in protecting themselves, their peers, and their communities. When children are given the knowledge and tools to understand risks, they become powerful partners in creating solutions and strengthening school safety. With our partners and with support from ECHO we are helping to build a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.

🎉 Happy Monday Belize!😀🖐️
Meet 40 student leaders from Golden Stream, Indian Creek, Big Falls and San Pedro Columbia Primary Schools who are taking part in the School Safety Leadership Programme: Let's Learn to Prevent Disasters!

Through this initiative students are learning fun and practical ways to prevent risks, prepare for emergencies, and help build safer schools for everyone. These students are doing more than learning, they're leading. As members of their schools' Safety and Disaster Leadership Teams, they're proving that children can be powerful advocates for change, influencing their peers and helping create a culture of safety.

When children understand risks, they can actively participate in solutions. Let's cheer on these young champions as they prepare to help make their schools safer, one lesson, one conversation, and one action at a time!

Introducing a Powerful Partnership

Every Child Seen. Every Child Heard. Every Child Included.

UNICEF Belize and the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children are joining voices to champion the rights, inclusion, and well-being of children with disabilities across Belize.

Together, we are committed to challenging stereotypes, raising awareness, and promoting a Belize where every child is valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Through this partnership, we will amplify the voices of children with disabilities, celebrate their strengths and achievements, and encourage families, schools, communities, and organizations to create environments where every child can thrive.

Children with disabilities are not defined by their challenges. They are dreamers, leaders, learners, creators, and changemakers. Their stories matter. Their voices matter. Their rights matter.

Join us as we work towards a more inclusive Belize where every child is seen, heard, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed.

Together, let's build a Belize where inclusion is not the exception, but the norm.
