OFFICIAL STATEMENT

The National Kriol Council of Belize has issued a formal statement affirming the Indigenous identity, ancestral rights, and territorial continuity of the Kriol People of Belize.

The statement addresses ongoing concerns affecting ancestral Kriol communities, including Placencia, Sittee River Village, Yemeri Grove, and other historic Kriol settlements throughout Belize.

The NKC maintains that Kriol communities possess collective rights grounded in historical occupation, cultural continuity, ancestral connection to territory, and internationally recognized Indigenous protections.

This is not merely a cultural issue. It is a matter of historical truth, equal protection, Indigenous dignity, and intergenerational justice.

The Kriol People have contributed to the building, defense, economy, governance, and cultural fabric of Belize for centuries. Our communities deserve recognition, consultation, and protection.

Our executive welcomes this important engagement with the National Institute of Culture and History as we continue strengthening partnerships in service of Kriol people, history, culture and identity.

Our discussions with NICH centred on key priorities: strengthening our organisational governance and resource mobilisation, advancing community issues into national dialogue, and expanding impactful initiatives like Kriol Heritage Month (Look out for it in OCTOBER!).

We also emphasised the importance of Emancipation Day education, ensuring that the story of the Belize Kriols (our ancestors and their journey to true freedom and representation) is clearly understood and meaningfully taught and respected by all.

As we move forward, we remain committed to elevating Kriol voices, safeguarding our heritage, and deepening national recognition of our identity and contributions to nationhood.
