TOCaDI is part of the Kuru Family of Organizations. (See Setswana below) The Trust for Okavango Cultural and Development Initiatives (TOCaDI) aims to increase the capacity of remote area dwellers in Botswana’s Okavango sub-district, so they can respond to their own situations. TOCaDI works in the following areas: community mobilization, support to Community Trusts, land acquisition, community heal
th with special focus on HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis, and Craft development. Some of TOCaDI's projects are follows:
Crafts Centre:
This craft centre is a home for the great craftsmanship of Shakawe and for many of the villages in the upper Okavango panhandle. As such the craft centre will have a range of product lines including baskets, Khoe baskets, fishing baskets, wood carving products, bracelets, leather products and others. Training Centre:
The main objective of this project is to provide training facilities in Shakawe to equip community members with tourism related skills. The Okavango Heritage Trail:
This project entails the development of campsites in several communities. The objective is to exploit the rich tangible and intangible culture of the Okavango communities. Each community will offer a specific cultural package different from what is offered by the other villages. Shaikarawe Forestry Reserve:
Shaikarawe is a small San settlement in the Ngamiland District. It has an approximate population of 500 people. It currently suffers from high levels of poverty and food insecurity. The residents are highly dependant on the forests in the area which are being used unsustainably by surrounding communities. A forestry reserve will ensure the protection and sustainable use of the natural resources in the area. TOCaDI depends on the good will of donor and development partners.
