The support group was formed in response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Introduction
Batlang Support Group is a community- based organisation that was formed in 2003 and formally registered in 2007 with the Registrar of Societies. The support group was formed in response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic which greatly affected many families and the Mogoditshane village in Kweneng District. The effect o
f HIV and AIDS pandemic was exacerbated by some circles of poverty and unemployment in the area and the high population density which is associated with a series of social problems linked with the spread of HIV and AIDS. Batlang Support Group responded to this need by establishing an orphan care programme for the orphaned and vulnerable children, which later became a fully operational drop in centre. People living with HIV (PLHIV) and the affected at Nko ya Phiri, Mogoditshane contributed to the founding the Support Group with the main goal of promoting effective Orphaned and Vulnerable Children interventions and supporting HIV and AIDS and STIs prevention and Care and Support interventions within the community. The existence of Batlang Support Group has identified the serious need in Mogoditshane to harmonise People Living with HIV and OVC activities and its plans are that, Batlang has formed collaboration with Kweneng District Multi Sectoral AIDS Committee to engage together in sensitisation, awareness, coordination and networking on District Priority Prevention Interventions. Batlang is registered under the Registrar of Societies Act of the Laws of Botswana and as such, its rights and obligations are vested in it independently of its elected Board of Directors.
