YCC Botswana and Green Africa Youth Organization-GAYO BotswanaAdvance Parliamentary Advocacy Capacity

This past week, the Youth Climate Council Botswana and GAYO Botswana completed a two-day intensive workshop on Governance, Strategic Advocacy, and Parliamentary Engagement, convened by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung(FES) Botswana under the "Bridging the Gap" project, with support from the Botswana Parliament.

The session brought together 24 civil society practitioners to strengthen competencies in policy influencing, parliamentary submissions, and strategic negotiation.

Key Policy Priorities Identified for the Parliamentary Committee on Wildlife, Tourism, Climate, and Environment:

1. Human-Wildlife Conflict – Development of mitigation strategies and equitable compensation frameworks for affected communities.
2. Policy & Landscape Fragmentation – Addressing siloed governance structures that undermine coordinated environmental action.
3. Climate Finance – Advancing accessible, transparent, and locally responsive funding mechanisms for adaptation and resilience projects.

Participants were equipped with practical tools including stakeholder mapping, evidence-based messaging, and BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) frameworks to secure durable policy commitments.

YCC Botswana and GAYO Botswana extend appreciation to FES Botswana and the Botswana Parliament for strengthening civil society capacity to engage meaningfully in national policymaking processes.

MAUN – THE YOUTH NDC FORUM IS HAPPENING NOW

The Youth Climate Council Botswana, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, UNDP Botswana, and BA ISAGO University, is currently holding the second and final regional Youth NDC Engagement Forum at BA ISAGO University's Maun campus.

This morning, Deputy Director of the Department of Meteorological Services, Mr Sacrasta Nchengwa, opened the forum with a call for whole-of-society climate solutions. District Commissioner Mr Thabang Waloka followed with a keynote address reaffirming government's commitment to youth inclusion in the NDC process.

Representatives from UNDP and GAYO Botswana, including Ms Chimbidzani Bratonozic and Ms Granny Lesiamang, emphasized the urgent need to move climate dialogue beyond Gaborone. The gap has been known since the PreCOP30 and PostCOP30 forums. Today, in Maun, that gap is being closed.

Over 100 young people are now engaged in breakout sessions across three tracks:

Circular Economy & Green Jobs – Waste-to-wealth, sustainable enterprises, and green employment pathways.

Local Adaptation & Resilience – Water scarcity, agricultural resilience, and ecosystem-based solutions.

Policy Governance – NDC processes and how youth can influence national climate policy.

By the end of today, participants will produce a Youth Action Statement that will feed directly into Botswana's NDC 3.0 process.

This is what decentralised climate governance looks like. Maun is not watching from the sidelines. Maun is in the room.
