Stepping Stones International (SSI) was the first program of its kind in Botswana focused exclusively on adolescent and youth development. We use a holistic, human centered design approach to implementation, as well as data driven programs to reach vulnerable girls, boys and families. The impact made in young people's lives is evident through the 73% of y

This past week, the Honourable Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, visited SSI's Letlhakane programs alongside a delegation from Debswana Diamond Company.

She sat with our Grannies Support Group, listened to a Coaching Boys into Men coach, she heard from young mothers, caregivers, and young leaders about how our programmes have changed their lives.

In her keynote address, the Minister reminded us of something we hold dear: "Partners like SSI are vital in reducing social ills and strengthening communities."

After 20 years of this work, unlocking young people's potential one programme at a time, we're honoured to be recognized.

Something's growing in Malawi. 🌱

Last week we hosted "Your Story. Your Voice: Content Creation Lab" alongside our friends at .global in Lilongwe. Our young people explored storytelling, discovered their power and imagined their futures.

This was the first of many things to come.

🔍 SSI Program Spotlight: Coaching Boys Into Men

What We Do: We train coaches to teach young male athletes about healthy relationships, respect, and intervention.

Why Coaches? They're trusted adults. Young men listen to them. They influence culture on and off the field.

Key Outcomes:
✓ Young men recognise and speak up about abuse
✓ Bystanders intervene instead of staying silent
✓ Abuse perpetration decreases
✓ Healthy peer relationships build

The Bottom Line: When coaches intentionally teach healthy masculinity, everything shifts. Teams get stronger. Communities get safer. Young men become allies.

Today, our Executive Director, Lisa Jamu, is sharing our partnership with international art and drama therapy specialists from the UK, Emma Mills, Rebecca Lunn, and Michelle Hope, and the Botswana Police Service.

Our collaboration produced trauma-informed creative methods training designed to equip our frontline responders with evidence-based approaches to support children who have experienced trauma.

This work shows that when experts, community, and law enforcement collaborate, we can create systems that protect efficiently in low-resource contexts.

At SSI, we've learned to think about youth empowerment differently.

It's easy to say "let's give young people opportunities." But that's not quite empowerment, is it? That's still us deciding for the youth.

Real empowerment is different. It's about building the conditions where young people can create their own opportunities.

It's the difference between helping and enabling.

SSI joins the ISPCAN / International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect. It's a network of researchers, programs, and policymakers all working toward the same goal: to provide fast, efficient support to children to reduce youth morbidity.
