PANEL 2 - Circular Economy & Green Innovation Showcase
Turning Waste into Opportunity Through Youth-Led Innovation

Moderated by Granny Lesiamang, GAYO Interim Country Director, the interactive session at LCOY Botswana 2026 showcased how young innovators are rethinking waste, developing sustainable products, and promoting responsible resource management.

Same of Botala shared how plant-based materials can be used to manufacture products that resemble conventional plastic, offering alternatives that can help reduce plastic pollution. She also highlighted an important lesson: compostable does not automatically mean biodegradable under all conditions, as specific environmental conditions may be required for decomposition.

Nnusa reflected on how GAYO inspired her to explore new possibilities, emphasising that passion, creativity, and commitment can turn ideas into meaningful innovations. Meanwhile, Mfula of Thrifty Threads demonstrated how discarded clothing and textile waste can be transformed into fashionable pieces, challenging the fast-fashion mindset and reminding young people that with creativity, old can become new. Itumeleng also shared how participating in the programme had changed their perspective on waste, demonstrating the power of environmental education to reshape attitudes and inspire sustainable practices.

The session reinforced the importance of youth-led innovation, circular business models, and shifting mindsets to see waste as a resource rather than a problem.

The message is clear: sustainability begins when we rethink what we throw away and recognise what we can create from it.

CHANGE THE CURRENT: YOUTH CLIMATE JUSTICE LAB✊🏾

On 12 September 2026, Conscientious Eco-Planet Foundation was proud to co-organise Change the Current, a Youth Climate Justice Lab held at Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) from 09:00–13:00 as part of the African Climate Alliance’s Climate Week.

Bringing together 40 BIUST students, the Lab created an interactive space for young people to explore climate justice through a Botswana and African lens connecting climate change with justice, inequality, participation and systems change.

At Conscientious Eco-Planet Foundation, we facilitated the Water Justice component. We explored questions around access to water, water insecurity, climate pressures on Botswana’s water resources, sustainable water resources management and the importance of meaningful participation in water-related decisions.

But Change the Current was about more than conversation.

The Lab connected Water Justice, Gender Justice and Intergenerational Solidarity, recognising that these issues are deeply interconnected. Young people then moved from discussion to action identifying climate and environmental challenges affecting Botswana and co-designing practical solutions, including who needs to be involved and what the first step towards change could be.

We are grateful to the African Climate Alliance (Anesu Shantel - ACA Ambassador and Organiser), Gaia Collective, Palapye Green Team (BCCN), the District Youth Climate Council, the facilitation team, volunteers, and most importantly, the young people who brought their ideas, experiences and energy into the room.

The current is already moving. Now, the question is: what will we change?

At Conscientious Eco-Planet Foundation, we believe climate justice must be rooted in our communities, informed by lived experiences, and driven by young people who are ready to shape a more just and sustainable future for Botswana and Africa.
