Rotary Okavango is proud to reflect on the success of the "Tsholetsang Banana Program", a transformative initiative that continues to empower young people with the confidence, leadership skills and self-belief needed to build meaningful and productive lives.
Designed primarily for school leavers, the program focuses on personal leadership and self-development, helping participants better understand themselves, their communities and the world around them. While practical guidance is provided on job seeking and improving employability, the programme goes far beyond employment. It encourages young people to recognise that their value and purpose are not defined solely by having a job, but by their character, resilience and ability to contribute positively to society.
Originally launched in 2025 through the Botoka Foundation and the Drongo School of Leadership, the program was adopted by the Rotary Club of Okavango at the beginning of this year. Since then, a series of workshops has been delivered, reaching hundreds of young people across the region.
The journey began in Maun, where four workshops welcomed approximately 200 participants. As the program gained momentum, Rotary expanded its reach beyond Maun into the heart of the Okavango Delta, taking the final workshops to Xakao. The response from the community exceeded expectations, with around 100 participants attending the first workshop and nearly 200 joining the second. One of the most encouraging outcomes was seeing not only young people participate, but also parents who recognised the value of the program and joined the conversations.
This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of Lodge Builders Botswana, whose generous sponsorship fully funded the 12-week program. Their commitment ensured that Rotary could focus on delivering meaningful workshops without financial constraints, allowing the initiative to reach even more communities. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lodge Builders Botswana for believing in the potential of Botswana's youth and investing in their future.
We also extend heartfelt thanks to the March Methodist Church in Maun and the Village Church in Xakao for generously providing venues and supporting the program. Their partnership played an important role in making the workshops accessible while helping to keep costs manageable.
Together, through collaboration, generosity and a shared commitment to developing future leaders, we have made a lasting impact on the lives of many young people. We look forward to building on this success and continuing to inspire, equip and empower the next generation to lead lives of purpose, resilience and hope.
