Bana Ba Letsatsi

Bana Ba Letsatsi Welcome to Bana Ba Letsatsi. We are based in Maun, Botswana and run a centre that supports over 150 A personal file is kept and updated.

Bana Ba Letsatsi was formed in 2002 in response to growing number of children who were working on the streets, suffering abuse, dropping out of school and addicted to drugs in our community. We are a non-governmental organisation providing essential support services to children, youth and their caregivers at risk in Maun, northern Botswana. Bana Ba Letsatsi offers a range of programs whose common

core is to support, encourage, rehabilitate and empower these young people to return to mainstream schools, establish a drug and crime free life, and become productive members of our future society. Bana Ba Letsatsi, meaning Sunshine Children in Setswana, is a day-shelter centre that offers a place of safety for those registered with us. From here we provide ongoing support in the form of counselling, education, skills training, daily meals, sports, clothes, transport, medical attention, hygiene facilities and many other activities. Each individual is assessed and monitored, and a program implemented in line with their needs. This three-stage assessment includes interviews with the child, relatives and school. The challenges that the children we support can face is a lack of parental care; having dropped out or never been to school; suffering sexual or physical abuse; begging or working underage and abusing glue and other drugs. Child assessments and home visits are conducted to ensure the children can be classified as children at risk. Regular home visits are carried out whenever possible to meet with parents or relatives to further assess the problems facing a child and counsel the families. If we are unable to re-introduce the child to school we will add them to our non-formal morning classes held at the centre, until such a time that they are ready to attend a formal school. When we are able to re-introduce to official schools, we monitor their progress daily; our counselors are always in contact with the school teachers. Where children have voluntarily dropped out of school, counseling sessions are held to uncover the reasons behind leaving. This, together with visits to the school, allows us to find an acceptable solution for each child. Working with the Government social workers, Bana Ba Letsatsi also ensures that the child has the necessary uniforms, books, transport money and other essential resources. A workshop alongside our centre was built to facilitate family initiative programs, where the caregivers of our vulnerable children may learn skills and be facilitated to earn a small income. Youth development has been a strong focus at Bana Ba Letsatsi to train older children in plumbing, brick-laying and roofing and assisting them in finding permanent employment. Each member of the Bana Ba Letsatsi staff team works to support those registered with us in every way that is necessary. We believe that children are our future.

Hello BBL Family,

Today we celebrate one of our very own shining stars, Apo Mutasa. 🌟

Enjoy reading her story below. We celebrate you, Apo, and wish you a wonderful, successful, and pleasant stay in Eswatini. May this new chapter bring you growth, learning, great experiences, and lasting memories.

Safe travels and all the very best from your BBL Family! πŸ’›β˜€οΈπŸŒβœ¨

Here is a note from Apo πŸ’ž:
I am honored to have been selected as one of the 18 students chosen from the entire Boitekanelo College to participate in an external clinical attachment in Eswatini. This opportunity is a great achievement for me, as it recognizes my dedication and commitment to my studies in Emergency Medical Care. The attachment will expose me to a different healthcare environment where I will gain practical clinical experience, improve my patient care skills, and learn from healthcare professionals in another country. Being selected among many students is both motivating and inspiring, and I am proud to represent not only my college during this international placement, but also BBL as a graduate from there.
The clinical attachment will take place in Eswatini for a period of two months, from the 1st of June 2026 until the 31st of July 2026. During this time, I will be involved in hands-on clinical training that will help me build confidence, strengthen my professional competencies, and broaden my understanding of emergency medical care practices. In addition to academic and clinical growth, the attachment will also provide cultural exposure and networking opportunities that will contribute positively to my future career as a healthcare professional.

Last week marked a truly special milestone for Bana Ba Letsatsi as we proudly unveiled our newly built classroom block. β€οΈπŸ“š
This life-changing project was made possible through the generous support of Ker & Downey Huston together with Chobe Holdings through Chobe Impact. We were deeply honored to host the Marek family, Directors of Ker & Downey Huston, who were present for this memorable occasion. Mr. David Marek had the honour of officially cutting the ribbon, marking the beginning of a new chapter for vulnerable children at Bana Ba Letsatsi.
As we celebrated this beautiful moment, we reflected on how far we have come β€” from only being able to accommodate 11 children in our OSEC classrooms to now supporting 73 children in the same programme. These classrooms represent hope, second chances, and a brighter future for children who deserve access to education and care.
To everyone who continues to believe in the Bana Ba Letsatsi vision, thank you for walking this journey with us. Together, we are changing lives. 🌞

What a truly celebratory day it was at Bana Ba Letsatsi! πŸ’›βœ¨

Our staff came together to appreciate the BBL Management Team β€”
Ms. Taboka Rotsi, Executive Director;
Mr. Eric Sipho, Head of Programs; and
Mrs. Oupha Kgolagano, Head of Operations.

As a gesture of gratitude for their sound and inspiring leadership, the team surprised each leader with thoughtful gifts and beautifully customised appreciation cards. The gifts were received with warmth, humility, and genuine appreciation.

This moment was more than just a celebration β€” it was a reflection of how respectful, professional, and humble leadership shapes a positive work culture. When leaders guide with integrity and lead by example, staff feel valued, supported, and motivated. And when staff are happy, empowered, and appreciated, they naturally become more productive, results-oriented, and committed to the mission.

From the entire BBL family:
Thank you to our management team for moulding us into a people-centred and results-driven team.
Your leadership continues to uplift us and strengthen the heart of BBL. πŸ’›πŸ€

πŸ›‘ URGENT: 27% of New HIV Infections in Botswana Are Adolescent Girls Aged 15–24

Today, Bana Ba Letsatsi (BBL) is deeply concerned by the alarming statistic shared by the Minister Of Health Dr Modise that 27% of all new HIV infections in Botswana occur among adolescent girls between the ages of 15 and 24. This is heartbreaking, these are children, teenagers, young women at the very beginning of their lives.

At BBL, many of our own beneficiaries fall within this vulnerable age group. We see firsthand the risks, the gaps, and the challenges they face daily. This makes the latest data not just a national crisis, but a personal concern for us as an organisation dedicated to protecting and uplifting vulnerable children and young people.

Botswana was once celebrated for winning the fight against HIV/AIDS. We did it together, with unity, strength, education, and community mobilisation. But the recent rise in infections feels like we are slipping backwards, and it is a clear sign that the fight is far from over.

BBL is calling for urgent action:
➑️ Strengthened HIV prevention and life-skills education for adolescents
➑️ Empowerment and protection programmes for both boys and girls
➑️ Improved access to youth-friendly reproductive health services
➑️ Strong community involvement and open conversations
➑️ Collaboration across all child-serving and health organisations

We have the knowledge, systems, and experience to turn this around. We did it before. We can do it again.

Let this be our call to stand together once more to protect our children, empower our communities, and
reduce the rising trend of HIV infections.
