POSTPONEMENT - Annual Nama Cultural Festival 2025 (7th Edition)

The BW Nama Development Trust, together with its Partners and

Yesterday, on the 3rd of September 2025, Dr. Albert K. Barume, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and his delegation visited the Namakhoen community in Lokgwabe, Kgalagadi North District, Botswana. The delegation included:
Mr. Karim Ghezraoui – Chief of Groups and Accountancy Section,
Mr. Emiliano Salazar – External Advisor to the Special Rapporteur &
Ms. Birgitte Feiring – External Advisor to the Special Rapporteur.

The Namakhoen Network of Heritage Advocacy and the BW Nama Development Trust jointly presented the concerns and aspirations of the Namakhoen, who are part of the Indigenous peoples of Southern Africa. This marked a historic engagement for the Nama community in Botswana, the first time the UN Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights has directly engaged with them.
The community highlighted their commitment to self-determination and called for greater inclusion in decision-making processes, especially on matters directly affecting their lives and heritage.
The Special Rapporteur’s visit followed official courtesy calls on the Presidency and the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, as confirmed by their official communication channels.
The engagement was enriched by the vibrant cultural expression of the Namastap dance, through which the community warmly welcomed the delegation.
As a community, we remain hopeful and trust the process as the Special Rapporteur continues his engagements with government and key stakeholders going forward.
