RAMOTSWA PENSIONER LOSES P1.5MILLION IN ALLEDGED BANK FRAUD
Police in Ramotswa are investigating a case in which a 60-year-old pensioner allegedly lost P1.5 million after falling victim to a fraudster who purported to be an employee of one of the local banks.
According to Ramotswa Police Station Commander Superitendent James Moikwathai the police received a tip off on Tuesday around 730am.
It is reported that the pensioner received a call from a person claiming to be assisting with the processing of her banking account.
The caller allegedly instructed the pensioner to follow a series of procedures, which she complied to, only to later discover that P1.5 million had been withdrawn from her account.
Superintendent Moikwathai urged members of the public, particularly pensioners, to exercise caution when dealing with people claiming to represent financial institutions.
He cautioned members of the public against following instructions from unknown callers and advised them to verify such calls directly with their banks using official contact numbers.
He further urged members of the public not to carry out transactions or provide information they did not understand.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing and there have been no arrests yet.
The case has since been referred to the Serious Crime Squad for further investigations.
