Gender Links Botswana

Last Thursday, Gender Links leadership was in Botswana, and one of the most meaningful moments of the visit was spending time with our local Marang Fund grantee partners.

We held an in-person check-in session to reflect on progress, share lessons, and connect beyond reports and emails. These conversations reaffirmed the power of community-led work and the importance of grounding regional initiatives in local realities.

We are grateful to LEGABIBO, Friends of Diversity, Pilot Mathambo Centre for Men’s Health, and Botswana Trans Initiative for the openness, commitment, and impact you continue to drive on the ground for the community.

🚨Illicit financial flows (IFFs) from tax evasion, corruption and mismanagement and money laundering silently affect the lives of Batswana, particularly women and young people. While IFFs are discussed in economic terms, their social and gendered impact is rarely unpacked. As funding for empowerment initiatives and youth opportunities shrinks, poverty deepens, pushing many women and young people into informal or survival economies including commercial s*x.

This World AIDS Day, we stand in solidarity with our partners, activists, and communities across Southern Africa who are working every day to create a world where HIV prevention, treatment, and care are accessible to all.
