Position: Zero Waste Action Coordinator
Employment type: Fixed-term contract (renewable, subject to performance and funding)
Organizational Background
Somarelang Tikologo – Environmental Watch Botswana is a pioneer non-governmental environmental
organization working in three thematic areas of Climate Action, Water and Biodiversity Conservation
and Zero Waste Action. It is dedicated to promoting sustainable environmental management through
advocacy, awareness, demonstration projects, and policy engagement.
As part of this commitment, Somarelang Tikologo is implementing a multi-year Zero Waste and Circular
Economy Programme, with a strong focus on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), waste reduction,
material recovery, and inclusive green value chains.
Position Summary
Somarelang Tikologo invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for the
position of Zero Waste Action Coordinator. The Coordinator will provide strategic, technical, and
operational leadership for the design, implementation, and scaling of Zero Waste and Circular Economy
initiatives, including the rollout and coordination of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems in
Botswana.
The role requires close collaboration with government institutions, local authorities, producers, recyclers,
community groups, and development partners to drive systemic change across the waste value chain.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Leadership and Coordination
 Lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the Zero Waste and Circular Economy
programme.
 Coordinate pilot projects covering waste reduction, reuse, recycling, organics recovery, and circular
manufacturing.
 Ensure alignment of programme activities with national policies, municipal plans, and international
sustainability frameworks.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Implementation
 Support the design and operationalisation of EPR schemes for priority waste streams
 Engage producers and importers to facilitate compliance and participation.
 Contribute to the development of EPR guidelines, operational models, and implementation
roadmaps.
Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships
 Build and manage partnerships with government ministries, local authorities, private sector actors,
informal waste workers, NGOs, and academic institutions.
 Facilitate multi-stakeholder platforms, consultations, and technical working groups.
 Represent Somarelang Tikologo in relevant national and regional forums on zero waste, circular
economy, and EPR.
Policy, Advocacy, and Capacity Building
 Support evidence-based advocacy for zero waste and circular economy policies.
 Contribute to policy briefs, technical reports, and position papers.
 Design and deliver capacity-building programmes for municipalities, communities, women and
youth groups, and SMEs.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
 Develop and manage project work plans, budgets, and performance indicators.
 Track progress against targets and ensure timely technical and donor reporting.
 Document lessons learned, best practices, and impact stories.
Required Qualifications and Experience
 A minimum of a Diploma in Business Management, Environmental Management, Waste
Management, Circular Economy or a related field.
 At least 5 years of progressive experience in waste management, environmental programmes,
circular economy initiatives, or related sustainability projects.
 Demonstrated experience or strong working knowledge of Extended Producer Responsibility
(EPR) systems and waste policy frameworks.
 Proven ability to coordinate multi-stakeholder projects and work with government and private
sector actors.
 Experience in project management, donor-funded programmes, and results-based reporting.
Key Competencies and Skills
 Strong technical understanding of zero waste, circular economy, and resource recovery systems.
 Excellent stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
 Sound analytical, writing, and presentation abilities.
 Strong organisational and project management skills.
 Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
 High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to environmental sustainability.
