From Training to Impact: Our ClimateFeatures Fellows Make Headlines! 📰

We are incredibly proud to see outstanding reporting from Kgosietsile Bontsi and Bhekinkosi Phiri featured in The Ngami Times

Both writers are talented participants in our BSHD ClimateFeatures Biodiversity Journalism Training, putting solutions journalism into action by spotlighting vital environmental and community stories from the field:

Honoring Our Invaluable Partnership with MOKOPI Conservation Trust 🌍🤝

Behind every successful field expedition and community-led initiative is an exceptional local partner. We extend our deepest appreciation to MOKOPI Conservation Trust for their incredible partnership during our biodiversity field activities!

MOKOPI Conservation Trust is a community-focused organization committed to protecting natural resources, conserving wildlife and biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development across Mopipi, Mokobaxane, and surrounding communities in Botswana. By harmonizing environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment, the Trust ensures that local communities benefit equitably from their natural and cultural heritage—supporting initiatives like the Mokobaxane Predator Park, environmental education, and sustainable community-based tourism.

During our fieldwork, MOKOPI Conservation Trust played an instrumental role:

Community Leadership & Mobilization: Served as our official host for Mopipi and Mokobaxane, seamlessly uniting traditional leaders (Dikgosi), local governance, farmers, and health workers.

Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitated inclusive dialogues across diverse local voices, heritage champions, and natural resource knowledge holders.

Fieldwork & Guidance: Guided and supported our on-the-ground biodiversity observations, land degradation assessments, and ecosystem studies across the region.

Honoring Our Invaluable Partnership with Tanate Sustainable Development Trust 🌍🤝

Behind every impactful field expedition is an exceptional local partner, and our work in Zutshwa would not have been possible without the incredible team at Tanate Sustainable Development Trust (Tanate SD)!

Tanate SD is a Botswana-based conservation and sustainable development organization dedicated to advancing biodiversity conservation, community-based natural resource management (CBNRM), climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods—working primarily within Botswana’s stunning Kalahari landscape. Through brilliant grassroots initiatives like the Kalahari Camelback Trackers program, they combine indigenous tracking knowledge with systematic wildlife monitoring across remote Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

During our time together, Tanate went above and beyond:

On-the-Ground Coordination: Acted as our expert local host in Zutshwa, seamlessly connecting us with the Kgosi, Village Development Committee (VDC), local trusts, salt mine personnel, primary school leadership, and community social workers.

Logistics & Field Support: Provided essential local transportation to meet stakeholders across the area alongside comfortable accommodation.

Indigenous Knowledge & Eco-Building: Shared invaluable traditional tracking insights and guided our team in building an eco-chalet—proudly named after BSHDNGO!

Community Integration: Brought us together over shared groceries, cooking, and everyday community life.

Thank you, Tanate Sustainable Development Trust, for championing locally led conservation, protecting Botswana’s unique biodiversity, and creating sustainable opportunities for communities living alongside wildlife!
