Youth Impact is a grassroots organization dedicated to bringing rigorous evidence off the academic shelf and using it to adapt and scale up health and education programs by youth for youth. Our programs have reached nearly 100,000 students in more than 600 schools across the country and shown impressive gains in HIV knowledge and numeracy. As such, we are a trusted partner of the Botswana governme

nt and we have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Basic Education to collaborate on the scale-up of "Teaching at the Right Level" (TaRL), a proven approach to improving literacy and numeracy. In addition, Youth Impact's Advisory Forum is chaired by the former Permanent Secretary of Basic Education and our co-founder chairs the Botswana National Youth Council. Youth Impact has a regional implementation and knowledge footprint beyond Botswana. Our s*xual and reproductive health program is being introduced in eSwatini and Malawi. We also are supporting the implementation of TaRL in Namibia and Kenya. Young 1ove is leading efforts to build an Innovation Hub in Botswana for TaRL to co-host trainings, share lessons learned, and test new innovations to maximize cost-effective impact at scale. It has partnered with the Government of Botswana and the Brookings Institution to be a Real-Time Scaling Lab as part of the Millions Learning project. Young 1ove is regularly invited to participate in fora to share our work, including workshops with the World Bank, the What Works Summit, and the Africa Evidence Network.

📚 The Philippines’ national remediation policy is lifting millions of children out of learning poverty.

Nine in ten ten-year-olds in the Philippines cannot read and understand an age-appropriate text. To confront this challenge, the Department of Education (DepEd) launched the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program—a nationwide reform providing targeted support to learners falling behind in foundational skills.

In collaboration with the World Bank Group and DepEd Philippines, we evaluated ARAL’s first year using national assessment data. The findings estimate that ARAL helped over 1.3 million additional learners move out of struggling-reader levels and more than 700,000 reach grade-level reading proficiency, exceeding the progress expected without the program.

The lesson? Protect what works: strengthen ARAL’s instructional core, use data to guide action and keep adapting implementation through regular evaluation.

đź’ˇ The Messenger Matters Dissemination Meeting

Today, the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Botswana chaired a meeting to share findings from the study: The messenger matters, Behavioral responses to s*x education in a cluster randomized trial, in partnership with the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, the Ministry of Health, Youth Impact and Botswana-Baylor Children's Clinical Centre of Excellence.
The meeting also brought together partners from UNESCO, BOFWA, NGOs, students and teachers from Gaborone Senior Secondary School.

đź’ˇ Evidence is most valuable when it informs what we do next.
This year’s annual What’s Good Evidence? workshop, led by our co-founder Noam Angrist focused on A/B testing. The team explored how our approach has evolved from proving that evidence-based programs work to using ongoing A/B tests to improve their effectiveness, reduce costs and protect impact as they scale.

Some key takeaways:
➡️ Make testing rigorous, rapid and regular—the three Rs
➡️ Use data already collected through program delivery
➡️ Test changes that enhance effectiveness or reduce costs
➡️ Choose indicators that are both timely and meaningful
➡️ Start with the decision you need to make, not the perfect research question

We also support other organisations to build their own A/B testing practice through practical tools, technical guidance and limited funding.

💡 It’s not only what young people are told but it’s who they hear it from.

Our new paper, published in PNAS Nexus, shares evidence from a randomised controlled trial of the Choices program from 343 schools and around 42,000 students across Botswana.

Students received the same s*x education information from either teachers or near peers closer to their age. Both groups helped students better understand risk but only the near-peer approach led to a change in behaviour, reducing adolescent pregnancy by over 40%.

The finding is simple but powerful: when designing programs for young people, choosing the right messenger can be just as important as choosing the right message.
