💡 Scaling does not have to weaken impact. It can strengthen it.

In a new piece for Springer Nature Research Communities, building on our recent Nature paper, we explore how ConnectEd’s phone-based targeted tutoring became more effective, not less, as it expanded across countries and delivery partners.

The lesson is clear: when programs protect their core components, use frequent monitoring and carry learning from one setting to the next, implementation can improve at scale.

Dale Pereira joins Youth Impact as a Research Associate in India with extensive experience in research, impact evaluation, and quantitative analysis. She previously worked as a Senior Research Associate at the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), contributing to impact evaluations focused on livelihoods and wellbeing, as well as research on transparency and reproducibility in the social sciences. Dale holds a PhD and an MSc in Economics from the University of Bristol.

Exchanging government engagement strategies between India and the Philippines ✨

At Youth Impact's Asia Regional Exchange, colleagues from India joined the Philippines team in Digos City and Davao City to share how each country works with government to deliver foundational learning at scale.

The group observed TaRL and ConnectEd sessions witnessing remarkable commitment to foundational learning through interactions with teachers, school leaders, senior government officials, and university leadership.

A key take-away was how deeply the programs are integrated into the local education system. Government isn’t just supporting the programs; it is embracing and driving them, which allows effective delivery at scale while keeping costs low.

The teams also looked at the systems that support and sustain teaching quality and teacher motivation in the Philippines: periodic professional requirements for teachers, service credits for additional work beyond school hours, and large schools that enable cost-efficient delivery.

These experiences reinforced a shared lesson: sustainable improvements in learning require more than effective interventions. They need strong systems, motivated teachers, and genuine government ownership.

We are grateful to the DepEd Philippines and University of Southeastern Philippines for their warmth, openness, and generosity in sharing their experiences.

Equipping future teachers with evidence-based tools expands learning beyond a single classroom.

The University of Namibia (UNAM), together with our affiliate partner, Meerkat Learning, recently certified 231 School-Based Studies student teachers who successfully implemented Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) earlier this year.
Trained across four campuses, the student teachers supported 200 schools in 12 regions, reaching 11,217 learners with foundational literacy and numeracy support.

Congratulations to these future educators for turning their training into meaningful impact!

A royal visit to a TaRL classroom 🇧🇼🇬🇧

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visited Philip Moshotle Memorial Primary School in Gaborone this week. During their visit, they observed a Teaching at the Right Level class, which now reaches every government primary school in the country.

We were pleased to welcome them alongside colleagues from Botswana’s Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Botswana. As Botswana marks 60 years of independence, the visit brought Their Royal Highnesses into one of the classrooms where our partnership with the Ministry is helping children build foundational reading and maths skills.

ConnectEd has expanded to a new state in India! 🇮🇳

We recently signed a State Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Jharkhand to launch Mobile Guru, ConnectEd’s Jharkhand version, with an initial pilot involving 200 teachers.

With this expansion, Jharkhand becomes the third state in India where we are partnering with the government to implement ConnectEd, marking another step towards strengthening learning through accessible, evidence-based solutions.
