HIASWANA AND BOITEKANELO COLLEGE FORGE A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE HEALTH INFORMATICS IN BOTSWANA
Today marked a significant milestone for digital health in Botswana as the Health Informatics Association of Botswana (HIASWANA) and Boitekanelo College (BC) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a strategic partnership in realizing the Health Informatics Framework. The signing ceremony represents a shared commitment to advancing Botswana's digital health agenda by fostering collaboration between academia and the health informatics profession.
Welcoming guests to the ceremony, Acting Dean of the School of Leadership and Management, Dr. Yvonne Tecla, emphasised that the rapid digital transformation of healthcare makes partnerships such as this more important than ever.
She noted that technology, health data, artificial intelligence, and digital health solutions are transforming healthcare delivery, making collaboration in health informatics essential for preparing graduates and professionals for an evolving healthcare environment. "This MoU represents more than a formal agreement. It reflects our shared commitment to knowledge exchange, capacity building, research, innovation, and preparing our professionals and students to navigate an increasingly digital healthcare environment," she said.
In his remarks, HIASWANA President, Dr. Kagiso Ndlovu, reflected on the longstanding relationship between the two institutions, noting that this partnership builds on the successful collaboration during the HELINA 2025 Scientific Conference, where Boitekanelo College was not merely an attendee but was an active supporter and participant in making that landmark conference a success.
"It is fitting that, less than a year later, we gather again not as conference partners, but as strategic partners committed to shaping the future of healthcare education and health informatics in Botswana," he said.
This partnership demonstrates the shared vision of HIASWANA and Boitekanelo College to strengthen Botswana's health informatics ecosystem through education, research, professional development, and innovation. Together, the two institutions are committed to building the capacity needed to support digital transformation in healthcare and improve health outcomes for communities across Botswana.
Following the signing ceremony, the HIASWANA delegation also had the opportunity to tour Boitekanelo College’s state-of-the-art skills labs, gaining firsthand insight into the cutting-edge facilities that are shaping the next generation of health informatics and health care professionals at large. From advanced simulation rooms to modern laboratories equipped with the latest technology, it was inspiring to see how the college is equipping students with practical skills and innovative tools essential for modern healthcare delivery. This immersive experience not only highlighted the college’s commitment to excellence but also reinforced the immense potential for collaboration in leveraging these facilities to enhance training, research, and practical application of health informatics across Botswana.
We look forward to the exciting opportunities that this partnership will create for students, professionals, researchers, healthcare institutions, and the nation as we work together towards a healthier, smarter, and digitally enabled Botswana.
