Maternal mental health is a significant concern in Botswana, with a substantial number of women experiencing depression during pregnancy and postpartum. According to the World Health Organization, between 19-25% of women in low- to middle-income countries, including Botswana, suffer from depression during pregnancy. This can have severe effects on both the mother and the child.

Key Statistics:

- In 2023, 26% of women were at risk of pre- and post-partum depression, while 36.5% needed referral.

- In 2024, 25% of women were at risk, and 33% needed referral.

- From January to May 2025, 18% of women were at risk, and 43% needed referral.

Causes and Risk Factors:

- Poverty and financial stress
- Lack of support and social isolation
- History of mental health issues
- Young, single mothers are particularly vulnerable

Effects on Mother and Child:

- Maternal depression can lead to:
- Low birth weight babies
- Miscarriages

Manier times, it is post partum depression that makes women feel like this after birth. It comes down to a lot of things: a lack of support, not being prepared, mental illness pre pregnancy, finances, relationship breakdowns and a whole lot. Sometimes it’s when people find the reality of motherhood not being what was portrayed by everyone. It’s a hard phase but I urge you to seek help
