Maternal mental health is a significant concern in Botswana, with a substantial number of women experiencing depression during pregnancy and postpartum. According to the World Health Organization, between 19-25% of women in low- to middle-income countries, including Botswana, suffer from depression during pregnancy. This can have severe effects on both the mother and the child.
Key Statistics:
- In 2023, 26% of women were at risk of pre- and post-partum depression, while 36.5% needed referral.
- In 2024, 25% of women were at risk, and 33% needed referral.
- From January to May 2025, 18% of women were at risk, and 43% needed referral.
