Today marks 100 years since the birth of our beloved father, statesman, and nation-builder โ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ข ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ซ๐.
A century ago, in the heart of Kanye, a humble boy entered the world. No one could have known then that this child would grow into a giant of a man โ one whose life would become inseparably woven into the story of Botswana itself. His journey from the dusty roads of Kanye to the global stage was not driven by ambition, but by duty. Not by the pursuit of power, but by a deep and unwavering love for his people.
We celebrate a life that embodied purpose, honour, and service. A life lived with unwavering principle and relentless compassion. A life that gave more than it took, lifted more than it carried, and inspired more than it commanded.
Sir Ketumile Masire was more than Botswanaโs second president.
He was a teacher who believed in the power of education to transform lives.
A farmer who honoured the land and its rhythms.
A peacemaker who carried wisdom into the toughest negotiations.
A leader who never lost sight of humility, dignity, and fairness.
In every office he held, he remained grounded. He led Botswana through some of its most formative years with grace and foresight, never placing himself above the people he served. He showed the world that African leadership could be principled, democratic, and visionary.
But to his family, he was also simply Mdala โ our father, our guide, our constant.
The man whose voice soothed storms.
Whose counsel calmed fears.
Whose values became the moral compass for generations.
He taught us that true greatness is not found in titles or triumphs, but in how you treat people โ with honesty, humility, and humanity. He taught us that to lead is to serve. That to love your country is to build for its future, not for applause, but for posterity.
Today, as we mark his 100th birthday, we remember not only the statesman but the storyteller, the thinker, the grandfather, the dreamer. We remember the laughter in his eyes, the wisdom in his words, and the strength in his silence.
Happy Heavenly 100th Birthday, Mdala.
You are forever in our hearts.
Forever in our minds.
Forever our father.
Forever our Mdala.
May your legacy continue to light the path for Botswana, for Africa, and for all who dare to serve with courage and compassion.
