BONEPWA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the former President of Botswana, the Government, and the nation at large following his passing of the former President of Botswana Dr Festus Mogae, whose contribution to the HIV response will forever be remembered for giving hope and extending the lives of countless Batswana through expanded access to HIV treatment and care.

At a time when HIV/AIDS was devastating families and communities across Botswana, his leadership demonstrated courage, urgency, and commitment to the lives of Batswana. Through support for the national antiretroviral therapy programme and strengthening of Botswana’s HIV response, lives were saved, restored, and given hope for the future.

For many people living with HIV, access to treatment was not merely a health intervention, it was the difference between life and death, despair and dignity, fear and hope. His contribution will forever remain written in the stories of survivors, families, caregivers, and communities across Botswana.

As BONEPWA, an organization rooted in the experiences and voices of people living with HIV, we recognize and honour the role he played in advancing access to treatment, care, and national commitment during one of the most difficult periods in Botswana’s history.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, the Government of Botswana, and the nation at large.

May his legacy continue to inspire sustained investment in health, human rights, compassion, and equitable access to healthcare for all.

International Women’s Day 2026

Today, BONEPWA joins the world in celebrating the strength, resilience, and leadership of women and girls everywhere.

In Botswana and across our communities, women continue to stand at the forefront of families, communities, and the response to HIV. Women living with HIV have shown extraordinary courage, advocating for their rights, supporting one another, and leading change in the fight against stigma and discrimination.

However, while we celebrate progress, we must also acknowledge the challenges that many women and girls still face, including gender inequality, gender-based violence, stigma, and barriers to accessing health services. These challenges continue to affect the wellbeing, safety, and dignity of women, particularly those living with HIV.

At BONEPWA, we remain committed to working with communities, partners, and leaders to ensure that every woman and girl can live free from violence, discrimination, and fear, and has full access to health services, information, and opportunities.

We honour the voices of women living with HIV, whose experiences continue to shape stronger systems, more compassionate communities, and a more just society.

- When women rise, communities thrive.
- When women are protected, families are strengthened.
- When women are empowered, change becomes possible.

Re thata ka Mosadi… Thari ya Sechaba.

Let us continue to stand together to protect the rights, health, and dignity of all women and girls.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Month of Youth Against AIDS: Botswana Cannot Afford Silence
March is the Month of Youth Against AIDS, a reminder that while Botswana has made historic progress, too many of our young people are still being left behind.

The Reality Facing Our Youth
Young people are still carrying a heavy share of new HIV infections in Botswana.

- Many adolescent girls and young women continue to face higher risk.

- Intergenerational relationships, pressure, and economic vulnerability make it harder to negotiate safety.

- Stigma and fear still stop too many young people from testing or seeking help.

We celebrate babies born HIV-free, but we cannot ignore the young women still acquiring HIV at preventable rates, 1 in 27 AGYW (15-24) living with HIV is high.

It’s Not Just Behaviour and HIV. It’s Structure.
Youth vulnerability is shaped by the environments they grow up in:

- High Unemployment

- Gender inequality and power imbalances

- GBV and defilement

- Poverty and economic dependency

- Gaps in s*xuality education

- Mental health struggles

- Stigma and fear around HIV and s*xual health

- Alcohol and Drug use

These realities shape risk long before behaviour does. And they deserve national attention, not silence. Botswana’s Progress Is Real - But Not Enough. We have achieved:

- Universal ART access

- High viral suppression

- EMTCT validation

- Community-based HIV services

Youth Development Is HIV Prevention
Young people thrive when they have:

- Opportunity

- Identity and self-worth

- Education

- Leadership pathways

When youth value themselves and understand consent, they make safer choices.

This month must be more than commemoration. It must be commitment.

Botswana must:

Strengthen AGYW-focused prevention

Treat GBV and defilement as public health crises

Expand youth-friendly services

Invest in youth empowerment

Promote open dialogue on s*xuality, consent, and HIV

The future of our HIV response depends on how boldly we protect and invest in our youth today.

For Young People Living with HIV
Disclosure (when safe), adherence, and psychosocial support open the door to:

- Viral suppression

- Healthy futures

- Education and employment

- Relationships and family life

A better tomorrow is possible, but it requires support, not stigma.

This month should not be symbolic. It should be a turning point.

Botswana must:

- Strengthen prevention for adolescent girls and young women

- Treat GBV and defilement as national emergencies

- Expand youth‑friendly, confidential health services

- Invest in youth empowerment and economic resilience

- Engage men and boys in prevention

- Create safe spaces for honest conversations about s*x, consent, and relationships

Young people are not the problem, they are the solution. But they need systems that protect, empower, and believe in them.
