Maun has reinforced a powerful message: Botswana’s youth are ready — not just to participate, but to lead.

Across both Francistown and Maun, young people have:
✔ Engaged in policy dialogue
✔ Developed practical solutions
✔ Contributed to shaping national climate priorities

With the right platforms and support in place, the pathway from youth voice → policy influence → real impact is becoming increasingly clear. This is how a sustainable future is built.

This week, the Permanent Secretary of COS-PETROGAZ, leading a team of key Government of Senegal officials, engaged with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism as part of the ongoing 5-day Benchmarking and Experience Sharing Visit to Botswana.

As the first ministry engagement of the visit, the meeting explored Botswana’s experience in balancing natural resource development with environmental protection, pollution management, biodiversity conservation, and meaningful community involvement.

The exchange provided an important platform for shared learning on how extractive industries can be governed responsibly, ensuring that resource development contributes to economic transformation while safeguarding environmental and community interests.

As Senegal advances the development of its hydrocarbon sector, the engagement reaffirmed the value of sustainable natural resource governance, institutional cooperation, and shared learning in shaping extractive sectors that deliver long-term value for people, communities, and the environment.

The journey continues to Maun. By extending these engagements beyond the capital, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Youth Forum ensures that climate action in Botswana is inclusive, representative, and locally grounded.

Every region brings unique challenges — and equally powerful solutions.
Maun, your voice is critical in shaping Botswana’s climate future.

Francistown has set the tone.

Today’s discussions demonstrated that when young people are given the space, tools, and access, they bring forward innovative, grounded, and actionable solutions.

Key takeaway: Climate policy becomes meaningful when it reflects the voices and realities of the people it serves.

Next stop: Maun — where the conversation continues.

This afternoon, the Permanent Secretary of COS-PETROGAZ, leading a Team of key Government of Senegal officials, engaged with the Botswana Chamber of Mines as part of a 5-day Benchmarking and Experience Sharing visit to Botswana.

The engagement was focused on lessons for strengthening strategic and institutional capacities in the governance and sustainable management of natural resources, while drawing key learnings from Botswana’s mining sector and its role in the country’s economic transformation.

As Senegal continues to advance the development of its hydrocarbon sector, discussions centred on Botswana’s experience in mineral resource governance, regulatory and monitoring mechanisms, revenue management, local content, community development, and the broader contribution of extractive industries to national development.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore best practices in taxation, sovereign wealth fund governance, biodiversity protection, energy transition, and partnerships with Botswana’s research, training, and innovation institutions.

Through this exchange, Botswana and Senegal continue to strengthen shared learning on how natural resources can be managed sustainably, transparently, and in a manner that delivers long-term value for communities and the economy.

By investing in youth knowledge, participation, and leadership, partners like UNDP are helping ensure that climate policy is inclusive, actionable, and future-focused.

The work continues — but the foundation is set.

Real climate action requires more than ideas — it needs systems, partnerships, and support. Through our collaboration with government and youth-led organizations, the United Nations Development Programme is helping to:
🔹 Strengthen youth participation in national climate policy
🔹 Provide technical guidance on NDC 3.0
🔹 Ensure inclusive platforms (sign language, live streaming, accessibility)
🔹 Turn dialogue into actionable outcomes that influence policy
Because meaningful climate solutions must be inclusive, informed, and locally driven.
