Comrades of BOPPAWU, fellow workers, brothers and sisters in struggle,
Today, we mark Labour Day under circumstances that reflect both our challenges and our determination. As a union, we have not yet had the means to come together and commemorate May Day in the way we would wish. No rally, no public gathering, no shared platform.
But let us be honest about what that means.
It does not mean we are absent.
It does not mean we are weak.
It means we are still building.
BOPPAWU is a young union, born in difficult economic times—when workers are stretched, when resources are scarce, and when organizing itself is a challenge. The fact that we have not yet commemorated May Day together is not our failure; it is our starting point.
Because a union is not defined by a single event. It is defined by its commitment to workers, day in and day out.
We are building something real. Every member who joins, every workplace conversation, every act of solidarity—these are the foundations of a future where BOPPAWU will not only commemorate May Day, but lead it with strength and pride.
To every member: you are the union. Not a stage, not a march, not a celebration—you.
And even though we are not gathered in one place today, we are united in purpose. Our struggles are shared, and so is our resolve.
In these tough economic times, our responsibility is even greater. We must reach out to each other, organize where we are, and stand firm against unfair conditions. We must turn our limitations into motivation.
We demand fair wages that reflect the cost of living.
We demand dignity and respect in every workplace.
We demand job security and protection from exploitation.
And we will continue organizing until these demands are heard and met.
Let this Labour Day not remind us of what we have not yet done—but of what we are building.
The day will come when BOPPAWU fills the streets on May Day. The day will come when our voices are impossible to ignore. But that future depends on what we do now.
From our workplaces, from our communities, and even from our homes—we build.
Solidarity forever.
