What if every kilometre could help change lives?

The Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD), in partnership with Bidii Yetu Organization, invites you to an inspiring Fundraising Gala Dinner in support of the Bidii Yetu 2026 Inclusive Cycling Epic — a remarkable journey from Gaborone to Kasane, from 24 October to 6 November 2026.

Bringing together cyclists from Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique and the United States of America, this inclusive journey will champion the rights, abilities and participation of persons with disabilities while raising awareness and mobilising support for respite care services in Gaborone and Kasane, as well as Para-sport development.

Duma FM’s Marketing Team today welcomed Bidii Yetu 2026 Gaborone–Kasane Challenge organiser, Thuso Rasetapa, as the station comes on board as one of the event’s sponsors.

The 1,000km hand cycling challenge for people with disabilities will take place from 24 October to 7 November 2026, covering the route from Gaborone to Kasane.

Rasetapa expressed appreciation for Duma FM’s support and called on more sponsors to come on board and support the initiative.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY | 10 OCTOBER

Today, the Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) joins the global community in raising awareness about the importance of mental health and well-being.

Mental health matters to everyone. Let us break the stigma, encourage open conversations, support one another, and promote inclusive mental health services that recognise the needs of all people, including persons with disabilities.

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Together, we can build a more compassionate and inclusive society where everyone feels valued and supported. 💙

BCD AND IDPC CONDUCT WORKSHOP ON THE DATA PROTECTION ACT

The Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD), in collaboration with the Information and Data Protection Commission (IDPC), conducted a workshop on the Data Protection Act (DPA), focusing on the importance of protecting personal information, safeguarding privacy, and promoting access to justice for persons with disabilities.

Representing the IDPC, Commissioner Somolekae highlighted that the Data Protection Act seeks to uphold the constitutional right to privacy and ensure the security of personal information.

She emphasized that data protection plays a crucial role in safeguarding individuals, organisations, and economic stability. She further explained that protecting personal data is essential for upholding human rights and individual liberties, while also reducing the risk of identity theft and financial fraud.

Commissioner Somolekae also outlined how the Act protects personal information by placing legally binding obligations on data controllers and requiring organisations to implement appropriate technical security safeguards. She highlighted the **right of access**, which allows individuals, as data subjects, to request access to the personal information held about them by an organisation and understand how that information is being processed.

Legal Aid Botswana also participated in the workshop, with Mr Seloka leading discussions on reasonable accommodation and procedural support for persons with disabilities within the justice system.

Mr Seloka explained that Legal Aid Botswana's mandate is to provide accessible, quality legal advice and assistance to disadvantaged citizens and residents. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that persons with disabilities can access the justice system on an equal basis with others.

He further noted that persons with disabilities can seek specialized assistance from legal aid institutions and public defense bodies to access legal representation and disability-sensitive legal counsel. He also highlighted the importance of procedural adjustments that promote fair trials without compromising judicial integrity or due process. These adjustments may include the provision of qualified sign language interpreters and communication facilitators to ensure effective communication and meaningful participation in legal proceedings.

The workshop reaffirmed the importance of protecting personal information, promoting equal access to justice, and ensuring that the rights of persons with disabilities are respected and upheld.

Protecting personal information and ensuring access to justice are essential steps towards an inclusive society where everyone's rights are respected.

WHEN DISASTER STRIKES, WILL EVERYONE BE ABLE TO ESCAPE, RECEIVE A WARNING AND GET HELP?

This critical question took centre stage today as the Office of The Ombudsman hosted a panel discussion workshop on “Inclusivity Crisis: Evaluating Botswana’s Legal Preparedness for Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction.”

Moderated by BCD Executive Director, Mr. Moffat Louis, the discussion brought together experts from government, legal institutions, emergency services, humanitarian organisations and the disability movement to examine whether Botswana’s laws and policies are translating into practical protection for persons with disabilities before, during and after disasters.

The panel explored critical issues including accessible early warning systems, emergency communication, evacuation, social protection, humanitarian response and coordination, while also highlighting the lived experiences of persons with disabilities.

One message stood out: disability inclusion cannot begin when disaster strikes. It must be built into preparedness, planning, communication and response systems from the start.

For persons with disabilities, an inaccessible emergency response can turn a disaster into an even greater crisis. Building truly inclusive disaster preparedness therefore requires strong implementation, accountability and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities.

When disaster strikes, no one should be left behind.
